A porous biochar supported nanoscale zero-valent iron material highly efficient for the simultaneous remediation of cadmium and lead contaminated soil

Wei Qian et al.

Summary: In this study, a porous biochar supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (BC-nZVI) was used to immobilize cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in clayey soil. The results showed that BC-nZVI process had better immobilization efficiency for Cd and Pb compared to other processes. Additionally, BC-nZVI addition increased soil pH and organic matter content. This study suggests that BC-nZVI is a potential technology for the remediation of heavy metals in soil.

A review of pristine and modified biochar immobilizing typical heavy metals in soil: Applications and challenges

Huabo Gong et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use of biochar for remediating heavy metal-contaminated soil has gained considerable global attention. This review summarizes the latest research on the immobilization of soil heavy metals using biochar in the past five years (until 2021). The methods, effects, and mechanisms of biochar and modified biochar in immobilizing typical heavy metals in soil are systematically presented. The reduction and precipitation of oxy-anionic heavy metals by biochar/modified biochar are the dominant mechanisms in reducing their toxicity. Pristine biochar can effectively immobilize cationic heavy metals. Commonly applied modification methods involve adding substances capable of precipitating heavy metals to the biochar. Additionally, the risks associated with biochar applications are assessed, such as leaching of certain heavy metals, biochar aging, and co-transportation of biochar nanoparticles with heavy metals. Future research should focus on the artificial/intelligent design of biochar for the remediation of multi-heavy metal-contaminated soil.

Silicate-modified oiltea camellia shell-derived biochar: A novel and cost-effective sorbent for cadmium removal

Tong Cai et al.

Summary: Oiltea camellia shell biochar was prepared by pyrolysis in the presence of sodium silicate, which significantly enhanced its adsorption capacity for Cd removal. Silicate-modification increased the specific surface area of biochar and promoted the internal diffusion of Cd on biochar.

Performance of lead ion removal by the three-dimensional carbon foam supported nanoscale zero-valent iron composite

Shuaishuai Li et al.

Summary: In this study, nano-zero-valent iron (nZVI) particles were immobilized on carbon foam (CF) with a three-dimensional network structure, exhibiting superior adsorption capacity for Pb2+. The novel structure of CF-nZVI shows good dispersibility and potential for environmental remediation due to low cost and easy separation.

Mechanism of cadmium removal from soil by silicate composite biochar and its recycling

Huabo Gong et al.

Summary: The study successfully prepared a new type of silicate bonded biochar with good adsorption performance and separation and recovery characteristics by applying silicate gel materials to the preparation of biochar. The silicate bonded biochar maintained good mechanical properties after three rounds of soil remediation, with compressive strength remaining between 210 and 270 N. The total Cd and available Cd in the soil were significantly reduced, and both SBC and MSBC showed high rates of reuse and adsorption regeneration, effectively decreasing Cd content in wheat.

The long-term effectiveness of ferromanganese biochar in soil Cd stabilization and reduction of Cd bioaccumulation in rice

Yuling Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of Fe-Mn-modified biochar for long-term soil remediation and its impact on Cd accumulation in rice plants. The results showed that the biochar effectively decreased the exchangeable Cd fraction in soil and reduced Cd bioaccumulation in rice, especially in the grain, ensuring food safety. Ferromanganese modification and application of biochar can maintain soil redox status, increase root Fe plaques, and enhance the stability of biochar, contributing to its high remediation efficiency over time.
