Carina Lackmann et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastics on soil organisms. The results showed that the threat to soil biota from microplastics is minimal at German pollution levels, but in areas with higher concentrations of microplastics, these findings can be seen as an early warning signal for more adverse effects.

Metabolic response of earthworms (Pheretima guillemi) to silver nanoparticles in sludge-amended soil

Min Li et al.

Summary: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in soil pose risks to soil invertebrates, but the toxicity of AgNPs at environmentally relevant concentrations is not well understood. This study investigated the effects of low-level AgNPs on the bioaccumulation, pathology, and metabolism of earthworms. The results showed that AgNPs exposure disturbed the metabolism of different body parts and induced intestinal damage in earthworms. The findings provide biochemical insights for the risk assessment of low-level AgNPs in terrestrial environments.

Enantioselective toxicity and oxidative stress effects of acetochlor on earthworms (Eisenia fetida) by mediating the signaling pathway

Yalei Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute and subchronic toxicities of the two enantiomers of acetochlor on earthworms, finding that R-acetochlor poses a higher risk in the soil environment compared to S-acetochlor, potentially due to a stronger oxidative stress effect induced by R-acetochlor.

Trichlorocarban induces developmental and immune toxicity to zebrafish (Danio rerio) by targeting TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB signaling pathway

Jiaqi Xu et al.

Summary: Exposure to TCC results in high embryonic toxicity and immunotoxicity in zebrafish, characterized by abnormal vascular development, increased oxidative stress and apoptosis, as well as reduction in immune cell number and function. The TCC-induced effects are mediated through the TLR4 signaling pathway, which can be rescued by inhibition of TLR4/MyD88/NF-kappa B pathway. Molecular docking studies show stable binding of TCC to TLR4 receptor.

Combined toxic effects of dioxin-like PCB77 with Fe-based nanoparticles in earthworm Eisenia fetida

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: Iron-based nanomaterials, specifically nano-zero valent iron (nZVI), show promise for remediating persistent halogenated contaminants like dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls. However, their interactions with beneficial soil functions and joint toxicity effects remain unknown. This study found that both nZVI and PCB77 inhibited earthworm growth and reproduction, with a synergistic effect observed in combined exposure. The addition of nZVI reduced PCB77 levels while increasing its accumulation in earthworms, potentially due to aggravated epidermal damage.
