Contamination and ecological risks of steroid metabolites require more attention in the environment: Evidence from the fishing ports

Shan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated 27 steroids and their metabolites in 15 typical fishing ports in Southeast China, revealing high proportions of steroid metabolites and newly observed metabolites in sediment samples. Untreated municipal sewage and aquaculture wastes are potential sources of steroids in the studied fishing ports, with high ecological risks identified across all sampling sites mainly due to contributions of parent steroids.

Tetrabromobisphenol A and hexabromocyclododecanes in sediments and biota from two typical mangrove wetlands of South China: Distribution, bioaccumulation and biomagnification

Huawei Li et al.

Summary: The study found variations in the distribution and bioaccumulation of TBBPA and HBCDs in sediments and biota species from two mangrove wetlands in the Pearl River Estuary and the Jiulong River Estuary. Levels of TBBPA and HBCDs differed significantly between sediments and biota, with differences in the predominant diastereoisomers observed.

Phthalate esters in surface sediments from fishing ports in Circum-Bohai-Sea region, China

Binxu Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the concentrations and possible sources of phthalate esters in surface sediments from fishing ports in the Circum-Bohai-Sea region, and assessed their ecological risks on algae, crustaceans, and fish. The results showed that certain PAEs posed medium to high ecological risks on sensitive aquatic organisms, and were mainly attributed to dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, and benzylbutyl phthalate.

Brominated flame retardants and heavy metals in common aquatic products from the pearl river delta, south china: Bioaccessibility assessment and human health implications

Yunjiang Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that bioaccessibility of heavy metals and HBCDDs in common aquatic products from the Pearl River Delta was significantly higher than that of PBDEs. Consumers faced higher non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks due to excessive arsenic intake from shellfish. Different intake levels of aquatic products among age and gender groups led to greater health risks for middle-aged populations and females.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers in surface sediments from fishing ports along the coast of Bohai Sea, China

Binxu Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution, congener patterns, possible sources, and ecological risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the surface sediments of 20 fishing ports along the coast of Bohai Sea. The results showed that BDE-209 was the dominant congener and high concentrations of PBDEs were found near Liaohe River, Haihe River, manufacturing plants of BFRs near Laizhou Bay, and tipping areas of marine garbage.

Tetrabromobisphenol A induces THR β-mediated inflammation and uterine injury in mice at environmentally relevant exposure concentrations

Wenjuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that TBBPA was present in a significant percentage of female Chinese volunteers and had adverse effects on mice, including increased secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppression of immune responses. Furthermore, TBBPA exposure may increase the risk of uterine cancer through the activation of inflammatory pathways.

Health toxicity effects of brominated flame retardants: From environmental to human exposure

Joana Feiteiro et al.

Summary: Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) are widely used brominated flame retardants in various industrial and consumer products, posing potential environmental contamination and health impacts. These compounds can act as endocrine disruptors, interfering with hormonal function and leading to adverse health outcomes.
