The Reactivity of the Metal Oxide-Water and Mineral-Water Interfaces - An Inorganic/Coordination Viewpoint

Marcelo Avena

Summary: The reactivity of the metal oxide-water interface and that of the mineral-water interface can be understood from the viewpoint of coordination chemistry. Ligand substitution reactions play a key role for metal complexes in both solution and at the surface, leading to the formation of adsorbed species that can be identified by surface spectroscopic techniques. Surface reactions, such as proton and anion/cation adsorption-desorption, can be easily explained in this context, showing that these processes occur through dissociative, associative, or interchange mechanisms similar to those in solution.
