Effect of chloride ions on the simultaneous electrodialysis and electrochemical oxidation of mature landfill leachate

Arseto Yekti Bagastyo et al.

Summary: Electrochemical oxidation and electrodialysis technologies were used to treat mature landfill leachate, effectively removing organic pollutants and ionic compounds. Higher chloride concentrations led to increased removal efficiency, except for total phosphate. Under specific conditions, high removal rates for COD, ammonium, total phosphate, and chloride were achieved.

Comparison in UV-induced photodegradation properties of dissolved organic matters with different origins

Xiaowei Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the UV-induced photodegradation properties of DOMs from different origins using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy as well as FlFFF technology. Results showed that chromophoric components were more easily degraded than non-chromophoric ones, and algae-derived DOM exhibited higher degradation rate and efficiency, possibly increasing in molecular sizes during the early period of photodegradation.

Treatment of membrane concentrated leachate by two-stage electrochemical process enhanced by ultraviolet radiation: Performance and mechanism

Xu Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-stage electrochemical (TSE) process enhanced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation was used to treat coagulated reverse osmosis concentrated leachate. The application of UV radiation throughout the TSE process significantly improved pollutant removal by promoting the generation of free radicals with strong oxidizing ability, particularly effective for refractory organics. After optimal UV-TSE treatment, various pollutants were efficiently removed, outperforming the traditional TSE process.

Electrochemical Oxidation Treatment of Municipal Solid Waste Landfill Leachate Using Pt Nanoparticles Modified Boron-Doped Diamond Electrode

Yaguang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focused on the treatment of municipal solid waste landfill leachate using boron-doped diamond (BDD) and Pt nanoparticles modified BDD (Pt NPs/BDD) through the electrochemical oxidation process. The results showed that Pt NPs/BDD had the highest efficiency in removing chemical oxygen demand (COD) by electrochemical oxidation. The scattered Pt nanoparticles on BDD surface promoted the adsorption of hydroxyl radicals, enhancing the oxidation rate of organic pollutants.

Application of Advanced Electrochemical Techniques for the Purification of Leachate in Landfills

Marco Vocciante et al.

Summary: This study used an electrochemical approach to address the issue of ammonia removal in landfill leachate. Through extensive experimental campaigns, the best solution was identified, considering preventive filtration or precipitation sections, and evaluating the efficiency in terms of energy costs. The data suggests that the electrochemical approach is feasible, allowing for operation with either high current densities (resulting in higher energy costs) or low current densities (with lower energy costs and longer electrode service life) after pre-treatment with coagulation/flocculation with aluminum polychloride.

Summary: This study applied four commonly used coagulants for enhanced coagulation pretreatment on a two-stage tight material MCL from MSWI plants. The conditions of enhanced coagulation were determined through a single factor experiment, and the removal efficiencies for COD, UV absorption, total nitrogen, color, and turbidity were investigated. Furthermore, characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) before and after pretreatment were analyzed in detail, showing a decrease in humic-like acid concentration and slight reduction in DOM molecular weight.
