Lead Isotope Evidence for Enhanced Anthropogenic Particle Transport to the Himalayas during Summer Months

Arijeet Mitra et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a seasonal pattern of anthropogenic lead transport from the Indo-Gangetic Plain to the Himalayas, with enhanced transport coinciding with higher summer temperatures. Over 50% of lead in Himalayan aerosols originates from the resuspension of historic lead derived from phased out leaded gasoline, underscoring the importance of legacy lead stored in the Indo-Gangetic Plains.

Tracing local sources and long-range transport of PM10 in central Taiwan by using chemical characteristics and Pb isotope ratios

Po-Chao Wu et al.

Summary: Central Taiwan is heavily polluted due to a mix of local emissions and natural dust, with contributions from long-range transport of pollutants from outside Taiwan. This study identified sources of PM10 in central Taiwan through various sampling campaigns. Results showed that PM10 in central Taiwan is mainly contributed by oil combustion and oil refineries during local events, with increasing contributions from natural sources during periods of high wind speed. Using chemical characteristics and Pb isotopes in PM10 could possibly track the sources of PM10 in central Taiwan.

Strong evidence for the continued contribution of lead deposited during the 20th century to the atmospheric environment in London of today

Eleonore Resongles et al.

Summary: Although leaded gasoline has been banned, lead is still significantly present in airborne particles in large cities such as London. The isotopic composition of lead in airborne particles suggests that lead from gasoline combustion remains a major contributor to lead pollution in London. Data collected over the past decade shows consistent levels of lead, indicating a persistent source of lead pollution in urban environments.
