Spatiotemporal patterns and ozone sensitivity of gaseous carbonyls at eleven urban sites in southeastern China

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration and sensitivities of carbonyls in urban areas of nine cities in Fujian Province, China, and analyzed their contributions to ozone concentration. The study found that formaldehyde, acetone, and acetaldehyde were the dominant carbonyl species, primarily originating from photochemical reactions and vehicle emissions. The study also revealed that carbonyl species contributed significantly to ozone formation potential, highlighting the need for stricter control measures.

Atmospheric nitrous acid (HONO) in an alternate process of haze pollution and ozone pollution in urban Beijing in summertime: Variations, sources and contribution to atmospheric photochemistry

Yunfeng Li et al.

Summary: The study found that vehicle exhaust was a major source of HONO, with nighttime formation primarily from heterogeneous conversion of NO2, especially during haze episodes. The results highlighted the importance of understanding the impact of HONO on atmospheric chemical processes.

Total OH Reactivity of Emissions from Humans: In Situ Measurement and Budget Analysis

Nijing Wang et al.

Summary: Humans are a significant source of VOCs in indoor environments, with direct anthropogenic emissions becoming increasingly important. This study quantified human emissions of OH reactivity and found no significant shortfall, but observed influences of ozone on breath and dermal emissions. Age groups showed differences in total OH reactivity with and without ozone exposure.

Elucidating the quantitative characterization of atmospheric oxidation capacity in Beijing, China

Zirui Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the atmospheric oxidizing capacity (AOC) in Beijing and found a clear seasonal pattern with stronger intensity in summer compared to winter. Different oxidation products and oxidants play dominant roles in AOC at different seasons and sites.

Aerosol Promotes Peroxyacetyl Nitrate Formation During Winter in the North China Plain

Wanyun Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that high concentrations of PAN in winter are mainly caused by VOC aging processes involving OH oxidation or photolysis, rather than ozonolysis pathways. Additionally, heterogeneous reactions on aerosols supplied key photochemical oxidants, promoting the formation of OVOC and PAN, explaining the intercorrelation between PM2.5-OVOC-PAN.

Heavy ozone pollution episodes in urban Beijing during the early summertime from 2014 to 2017: Implications for control strategy

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: In recent years, ground-level ozone has become the principal air pollutant in Beijing during summers, with concentrations and pollution days showing an increasing trend in May and June. Heavy O-3 pollution episodes were mainly caused by local photochemical formation, with VOCs playing a key role in O-3 formation.
