Photoelectrochemistry of metalloporphyrin-modified GaP semiconductors

Daiki Nishiori et al.

Summary: Photoelectrosynthetic materials utilize the power of the sun to produce fuels and other chemical products, but the operating principles governing their performance and effective methods for their assembly are not fully understood. This study reports the application of metalloporphyrins in assembling hybrid photoelectrosynthetic materials and investigates their photoelectrochemical properties. The hybrid electrodes prepared by UV-induced grafting of homogeneous metalloporphyrin reagents onto heterogeneous gallium phosphide surfaces show potential for better understanding charge-transfer kinetics at semiconductor|catalyst|liquid interfaces.

Monolayer Molecular Functionalization Enabled by Acid-Base Interaction for High-Performance Photochemical CO2 Reduction

Bo Shang et al.

Summary: We report the development of a hybrid catalyst consisting of carbon nitride (CNx) and cobalt phthalocyanine tetracarboxylic acid (CoPc-COOH), which shows high selectivity and reaction rate in converting CO2 to CO under simulated solar irradiation. The carboxylic acid substituents on the phthalocyanine ligands play a critical role in promoting catalytic activity and enabling ideal coverage of the cocatalyst on the semiconductor surface. The decoupling of charge carrier injection and CO2 reduction catalysis has important implications for future optimization and design of photocatalysts.

Understanding and Controlling the Performance-Limiting Steps of Catalyst-Modified Semiconductors

Nghi P. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Understanding and controlling factors that restrict the rates of fuel-forming reactions are crucial for designing effective catalyst-modified semiconductors for solar-to-fuel applications. This study reveals two distinct mechanisms of photoelectrochemical hydrogen production and highlights diagnostic tools for better understanding these processes. The complex interplay between transport of photons, electrons, and chemical substrates in photoelectrosynthetic reactions is illustrated in this work.

Porous Organic Polymers for Photocatalytic Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Yuan-Zhe Cheng et al.

Summary: Many porous organic polymers (POPs) with conjugated skeletons and large specific surface areas have been used as heterogeneous catalysts in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction. Different catalytic systems have been developed, each with its own advantages and drawbacks, such as higher efficiency but lower durability in metal-loaded systems. The reduction of co-catalysts in POPs aims to achieve a more environmentally friendly CO2 photoreduction reaction.

Energy catalysis needs ligands with high oxidative stability

Agnes E. Thorarinsdottir et al.

Summary: In brief, heterogeneous catalysts exhibit superior stability in large-scale and technologically important processes, but lack the tunability and control of reaction mechanism offered by molecular catalysts. Research in molecular catalysis has focused mainly on reductive catalytic transformations and ligand designs, facing challenges in oxidative instability for energy-conversion catalysis, thus necessitating the design of oxidatively and hydrolytically stable ligands.
