Absolute Absorption Cross-Section of the (A)over-tilde←(X)over-tilde Electronic Transition of the Ethyl Peroxy Radical and Rate Constant of Its Cross Reaction with HO2

Cuihong Zhang et al.

Summary: The absolute absorption cross-section of the ethyl peroxy radical C2H5O2 in the A <- X electronic transition has been determined using dual wavelengths time resolved continuous wave cavity ring down spectroscopy. Two methods were applied to determine the absorption cross-section, both yielding the same result. The rate constant for the cross reaction between C2H5O2 and HO2 has also been measured.

Structures and reactivity of peroxy radicals and dimeric products revealed by online tandem mass spectrometry

Sophie Tomaz et al.

Summary: Organic peroxy radicals (RO2) are essential in hydrocarbon degradation, with their autoxidation forming highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) that contribute to atmospheric particle formation and growth. This study employs online tandem mass spectrometry analyses to characterize RO2 and dimer structures, revealing insights into the formation pathways of HOM-RO2 radicals and dimers generated from monoterpene ozonolysis. Moreover, this research highlights the use of online tandem MS analyses as a unique method for studying reactive compounds like organic radicals.

Rate Constant and Branching Ratio for the Reactions of the Ethyl Peroxy Radical with Itself and with the Ethoxy Radical

Mirna Shamas et al.

Summary: The self-reaction of the ethyl peroxy radical has been studied using laser photolysis and continuous-wave cavity ring-down spectroscopy. There is strong disagreement about the rate constant and branching ratio, with the experimental results contradicting recommendations but confirming the most recent measurement, suggesting a need for revision. The reaction mechanism also involves the reaction of C2H5O2 with the ethoxy radical, with the extracted rate constant found to be slower than previous measurements.

Vacuum ultraviolet photochemistry of the conformers of the ethyl peroxy radical

Zuoying Wen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the conformers of the ethyl peroxy radical (C2H5O2) using synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations. It identifies and separates two types of C2H5+ in the photoionization mass spectra, originating from both C2H5 and dissociative photoionization of C2H5O2. The findings show that the gauche conformer (G-C2H5O2) of C2H5O2 has favorable Franck-Condon factors in the ionization transitions, while the contribution of the trans conformer (T-C2H5O2) to the photoionization spectrum is minor or negligible due to its large geometric changes in the photoionization process. Additionally, the instability of C2H5O2+ and its detailed dissociation mechanisms are unraveled with the aid of calculated potential energy curves.
