Dental Fluorosis: the Risk of Misdiagnosis-a Review

Ines A. Revelo-Mejia et al.

Summary: Fluoride is not the only factor responsible for enamel mottling, with other endogenous and exogenous factors also potentially causing such defects. More precise definition and diagnosis of dental fluorosis, along with a more discriminating diagnostic procedure, are necessary to ensure rational use and control of fluorides for dental health. Positive identification of environmental fluoride levels is crucial before confirming a diagnosis of fluorosis.

Calcium and Vitamin D Supplementation Effectively Alleviates Dental and Skeletal Fluorosis and Retain Elemental Homeostasis in Mice

Arpan Dey Bhowmik et al.

Summary: The study found that supplementation of calcium and vitamin D effectively alleviated dental and skeletal fluorosis, reduced fluoride deposition, and maintained elemental homeostasis of the bone. This suggests that calcium and vitamin D may act as redeemers for fluorosis, providing a potential treatment option for those suffering from toxic effects of fluoride.

Fluoride Ion-Selective Electrode for Organic Solutions

Yuko Yokoyama et al.

Summary: A fluoride ion-selective electrode (ISE) for organic solutions was developed, showing a linear response to fluoride ion concentration in the range of 10^(-4)-10^(-2) mol dm(-3) in propylene carbonate (PC) solutions. The lower and upper limits of the linear response were interpreted in terms of solubility and the formation of a silver fluoride complex. This concept shows promise for the development of ISEs for detecting ions in organic solutions under highly restrictive conditions.

Development of indole-based fluorescent probe for detection of fluoride and cell imaging of HepG2

Qin Wang et al.

Summary: The fluorescent probe IDS based on the indole ring was successfully designed and synthesized for selective detection of fluoride ions, with a low detection limit of 1.3 ppb. It was used for fluorescence imaging of F- in HepG2 cells and for detecting fluoride ion concentrations in environmental water samples and urine samples. These applications indicate that IDS is a sensitive probe with potential for research and the diagnosis of endemic fluorosis.

Fluoride regulates chondrocyte proliferation and autophagy via PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway

Lan Ma et al.

Summary: Fluoride inhibits chondrocyte proliferation and promotes autophagy through the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway in chondrogenesis. The study also showed that fluoride downregulates the mTOR signaling pathway-related genes and is associated with changes in autophagy-related gene expressions. MHY1485, a small-molecular mTOR activator, can reverse the fluoride-induced promotion of autophagy and recover the downregulation of proliferative chondrocyte markers induced by fluoride in chondrogenic cells.
