Metabolic cascade of complex organic wastes to medium-chain carboxylic acids: A review on the state-of-the-art multi-omics analysis for anaerobic chain elongation pathways

Hyunjin Kim et al.

Summary: The production of medium-chain carboxylic acid (MCCA) from organic wastes has attracted widespread attention for its high energy content and versatile applications. Research focuses on the microbial pathways contributing to carbon chain elongation in reactor microbiomes, with diverse genomics and metagenomics studies being conducted in various fields. Future research should address co-culture and multi-omics technology for a deeper understanding of the chain elongation pathways.

Direct Medium-Chain Carboxylic Acid Oil Separation from a Bioreactor by an Electrodialysis/Phase Separation Cell

Jiajie Xu et al.

Summary: Medium-chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs) can be extracted and separated efficiently with low energy consumption through a combination of electrodialysis/phase separation and pertraction, but the lower MCCA concentration in the bioreactor broth results in increased electric power consumption.

The Isolate Caproiciproducens sp. 7D4C2 Produces n-Caproate at Mildly Acidic Conditions From Hexoses: Genome and rBOX Comparison With Related Strains and Chain-Elongating Bacteria

Sofia Esquivel-Elizondo et al.

Summary: A new chain-elongating bacterium, 7D4C2, was discovered to grow at mildly acidic pH and showed higher specificity in producing n-caproate when fructose and n-butyrate were used as substrates. Comparative analysis revealed the conservation of its whole genome and reverse beta-oxidation genes among other bacteria.

Chain elongators, friends, and foes

Pieter Candry et al.

Summary: The production of medium chain carboxylic acids from low-value organic waste and side-streams through chain elongation process is driven by anaerobic microbial activity. Mixed microbial communities are considered as biocatalysts due to the use of wastes as feedstocks. Understanding and steering these microbiomes are crucial for optimizing bioprocess performance.

Summary: This study explores the production of high added-value substances MCFAs from real food waste in a circular economy strategy through single-stage fermentation processes. The results demonstrate the potential for efficient production of MCFAs under specific conditions, suggesting the presence of a lactate-based chain elongation process.

Production and extraction of medium chain carboxylic acids at a semi-pilot scale

Jose Maria Carvajal-Arroyo et al.

Summary: Microbial chain elongation can convert organic wastes and agroindustrial sidestreams into medium chain carboxylic acids (MCCAs), which can be used in various industries. Up-scaling production of MCCAs from thin stillage and separating them into oil at kilogram scale with a high MCCA content was achieved in this study. By decreasing the fermentation pH, the production rate of MCCAs and oil was doubled without the need for additional NaOH dosage.

Advances towards the understanding of microbial communities in dark fermentation of enzymatic hydrolysates: Diversity, structure and hydrogen production performance

Rodolfo Palomo-Briones et al.

Summary: Microbial communities involved in hydrogen production from enzymatic hydrolysates of agave bagasse were analyzed through 16S rRNA sequencing. The study found that different enzymatic hydrolysates and reactor configurations can influence microbial community diversity and H-2 production rates. Contrary to prevailing theory, a stable environment in continuous stirred-tank reactors favored high-performance H-2 production, with microbial diversity showing an inverse relationship with H-2 production rates.
