Fabrication of multifunctional polymethyl methacrylate composites based on phosphorus-containing polyaniline with excellent flame retardancy and electrical conductivity

Zhaoshun Zhan et al.

Summary: By incorporating phosphorus-containing polyaniline (FR-PANI) into PMMA composites, the flame retardancy, electrical conductivity, and thermal stability of the resultant materials were significantly improved. The presence of FR-PANI enhanced the formation of char residue, acting as a barrier to prevent heat transfer and the volatilization of flammable micromolecules. This makes FR-PANI a promising candidate for expanding the application range of PMMA to include multifunctional intelligent sensors.

High-flame retarding properties of polyacrylonitrile copolymer nanocomposites with synergistic effect of elemental sulfur-doped reduced graphene oxide and bio-derived catechol units

Jongho Kim et al.

Summary: Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based flame retardants with dihydroxy styrene monomers and catechol units were synthesized as high-flame retardants using an efficient thermal oxidative stabilization (TOS) process. Composite materials of PAN copolymers with graphene oxide (GO) and sulfur-doped reduced GO (SrGO) showed improved flame-retarding properties, attributed to the high char layer produced by TOS and radical scavenging effect of sulfur-functionalized SrGO. Incorporating SrGO into PAN copolymers with catechol units is a promising approach for developing environmentally friendly high-flame retardants.

Paloma Arenas-Guerrero et al.

Summary: The controlled orientation of metallic wires inside a polymeric medium can enhance desired properties of the composites. In this study, it was found that under low-frequency AC electric fields, DNA coils can provoke the orientation of silver nanowires in solution. This effect can be applied to achieve strong orientation of particles otherwise insensitive to electric fields in other particle-polymer systems.
