Sustainable iron-olive stone-based catalysts for Fenton-like olive mill wastewater treatment: Development and performance assessment in continuous fixed-bed reactor operation

Bruno M. Esteves et al.

Summary: Iron oxide catalysts supported on activated carbon prepared from olive stones show high efficiency in the degradation of refractory polyphenolic solutions and olive mill wastewater, achieving high removal and mineralization rates, and reducing the eco-toxicity of the wastewater.

Evaluation of Fenton and modified Fenton oxidation coupled with membrane distillation for produced water treatment: Benefits, challenges, and effluent toxicity

Giulio Farinelli et al.

Summary: Membrane distillation is a promising technology for desalinating hypersaline produced waters. The study investigated the use of the Fenton process as a pre-treatment to improve the quality and reduce toxicity of the final effluent. The pre-treatment steps did not improve the productivity of the membrane distillation process, but facilitated obtaining a final effluent with higher quality.

Concentration of Bioactive Phenolic Compounds in Olive Mill Wastewater by Direct Contact Membrane Distillation

Rosa Tundis et al.

Summary: Olive mill wastewater, a by-product of olive oil production, is known for its high pollution levels but also for its richness in polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-obesity properties. Concentrated fractions obtained from microfiltered OMW treated by DCMD showed higher levels of certain phenols and exhibited stronger antioxidant activity compared to the original wastewater.
