Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) scouring to mitigate membrane fouling: Performance, hydrodynamic mechanism and contribution quantification model

Wenxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of AGS-MBR in mitigating membrane fouling and reveals the scouring mechanism of AGS on membrane fouling. The results show that AGS-MBR has a low fouling rate and higher removal of organics and nutrients compared to conventional MBR. The scouring effect of AGS contributes significantly (39.9%) to mitigate membrane fouling.

Treatment technologies for emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants: A review

Prangya R. Rout et al.

Summary: Emerging contaminants (ECs) are unregulated anthropogenic chemicals that persist in the environment and are considered contaminants of emerging environmental concerns. Major classes of ECs include pharmaceuticals and personal care products, surfactants, plasticizers, pesticides, fire retardants, and nanomaterials. In wastewater treatment plants, EC removal efficiency ranges from 20-50% in the primary treatment step, 30-70% in the secondary treatment step, and >90% in the tertiary treatment step.

A critical review of advanced oxidation processes for emerging trace organic contaminant degradation: Mechanisms, factors, degradation products, and effluent toxicity

Arbab Tufail et al.

Summary: The persistent and low biodegradability of trace organic contaminants reduce their removal effectiveness in conventional wastewater treatments. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been extensively studied for degrading a wide range of TrOCs by producing reactive oxygen species. Factors such as concentration and nature of TrOCs, bulk wastewater characteristics, and dose of chemicals/catalysts used affect the degradation rates by different AOPs.

Mobility of insecticide residues and main intermediates in a clay-loam soil, and impact of leachate components on their photocatalytic degradation

Marina Aliste et al.

Summary: The study assessed the behavior of four insecticides and their reaction intermediates in a clayloam textured soil. It found that thiametoxam and imidacloprid were more mobile and easily recovered from leachates, while pirimicarb and chlorantraniliprole were classified as immobile. Photocatalytic treatment showed fast degradation rates for thiametoxam and imidacloprid, influenced by the water matrix composition.

Occurrence and removal of pharmaceuticals in wastewater treatment plants

Omar Fawzi Suleiman Khasawneh et al.

Summary: This paper systematically reviews the global occurrence and removal of 43 pharmaceutical compounds in municipal wastewater treatment plants from 2010 to 2020, assessing their daily mass load and emissions. Significant variation in pharmaceutical concentrations between regions is found, with higher influent concentrations in Asian regions. Environmental risk assessment shows that 12 monitored pharmaceuticals pose a high potential risk to aquatic ecosystems. Guidelines and regulations are discussed to mitigate pharmaceutical occurrence in the environment.
