Spray Synthesis of Photonic Crystal Based Automotive Coatings with Bright and Angular-Dependent Structural Colors

Chuan Wang et al.

Summary: A two-step spraying process followed by thermal curing has been developed to prepare waterproof PC coatings with bright, uniform, and angular-dependent structural colors. The coatings present colors with high saturation, including red/yellow/green/blue colors achieved by tuning the particle size, and many spectral/non-spectral colors via the mixing of base colors. The coatings offer a new choice for personalized automotive coatings with shiny colors changing with the viewing angles or the surface curvatures.

Simple and efficient fabrication of multi-stage color-changeable photonic prints as anti-counterfeit labels

Dongpeng Yang et al.

Summary: A simple and efficient method was developed to generate color changeable photonic prints (CCPPs) with multilevel tunable color contrasts by altering the cross-linking degrees of solvent responsive photonic crystals. The optical response of each part of the CCPPs was controlled by changing the cross-linking degree of PCs, allowing reversible color change between dried state and swelling to achieve encrypted information functionality in anti-fake labels. The prepared CCPPs can reveal multistage information depending on the volume fraction of ethanol, providing new insights for simple fabrication and applications in information protection and high-level anti-counterfeiting.

Humidity-Induced Simultaneous Visible and Fluorescence Photonic Patterns Enabled by Integration of Covalent Bonds and Ionic Crosslinks

Ruochen Lan et al.

Summary: In this work, a novel stimuli-responsive photonic crystal based on a cholesteric liquid crystalline network was designed and prepared, exhibiting visible and fluorescence patterns simultaneously. The unique advantage of this coating as anti-counterfeiting devices lies in the circularly polarized light from the helical structure of CLCN. By utilizing the thermochromic property of liquid crystal monomers, a permanent pattern can be achieved, and combining chemical crosslinking with physical ionic crosslinking allows for a dynamic humidity responsive pattern as well, demonstrating great potential in information storage.
