Spectroscopic Definition of a Highly Reactive Site in Cu-CHA for Selective Methane Oxidation: Tuning a Mono-μ-Oxo Dicopper(II) Active Site for Reactivity

Hannah M. Rhoda et al.

Summary: Experimental and theoretical studies show that the [Cu2O](2+) core in Cu-CHA exhibits higher reactivity towards methane to form methanol compared to the [Cu2O](2+) core in Cu-MFI, attributed to the stronger [Cu2OH](2+) bond and the relative orientation of coordinating bidentate O-Al-O T-sites. This work provides insights into how zeolite lattice constraints can impact active site reactivity.

Temperature dependence of Cu(I) oxidation and Cu(II) reduction kinetics in the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 on Cu-chabazite zeolites

Siddarth H. Krishna et al.

Summary: The apparent activation energy values for Cu-I oxidation and Cu-II reduction in Cu-CHA zeolites depend on the Cu ion density, increasing monotonically with Cu density for Cu-I oxidation but remaining invariant with Cu density for Cu-II reduction, except at the lowest Cu densities. The small differences between the E-app values for Cu-I oxidation and Cu-II reduction indicate weak temperature dependence for their kinetic relevance in a given Cu-CHA sample. These findings emphasize the importance of measuring rate data over wide ranges of reaction conditions and sample compositions to more accurately describe the kinetic behavior of NH3-solvated Cu ions in zeolites during low-temperature SCR catalysis.

Mapping Vibrational Spectra to the Structures of Copper Species in Zeolites Based on Calculated Stretching Frequencies of Adsorbed Nitrogen and Carbon Monoxides

Dennis Palagin et al.

Summary: In this study, adsorption behaviors of nitrogen monoxide and carbon monoxide on different copper sites in zeolites were investigated using density functional theory. The vibrational spectra regions were mapped to specific copper species to determine zeolitic copper speciation. The impact of different zeolite frameworks on the vibrational bands of adsorbed nitrogen monoxide was explored, showing potential for structure assignment based on infrared frequencies.

Dioxygen Activation Kinetics over Distinct Cu Site Types in Cu-Chabazite Zeolites

Daniel T. Bregante et al.

Summary: Cu-exchanged zeolites can activate O-2 to form active sites for partial methane oxidation, nitrogen oxide decomposition, and carbon monoxide oxidation. The kinetics of O-2 activation depend on the types and distribution of Cu sites within the zeolites, influenced by the arrangement of framework Al atoms. Experimental and theoretical analyses reveal the complex processes by which Cu ions activate O-2 to form active Cu(x)O(y) complexes, shedding light on the mechanisms underlying these reactions.

Thermodynamics Perspective on the Stepwise Conversion of Methane to Methanol over Cu-Exchanged SSZ-13

Florian Goltl et al.

Summary: Transition-metal exchanged zeolites show high selectivity in converting methane to methanol through a stepwise process. A comprehensive theoretical study is conducted to identify thermodynamically preferred active sites in Cu-exchanged zeolite SSZ-13 during the conversion and develop a thermodynamic model for different active sites anchored in various structures supported by different local Al distributions. The results are compared with experimental measurements, showing agreement and providing insights for optimizing the conversion process.

Investigating the role of Cu-oxo species in Cu-nitrate formation over Cu-CHA catalysts

Chiara Negri et al.

Summary: Through the study using techniques such as X-ray absorption spectroscopy, it was found that Z(2)Cu(II) sites are mainly present in samples with low Si/Al ratios, while framework-anchored Z[Cu-II(NO3)] complexes are formed in samples with higher Si/Al ratios.
