Drastic Events and Gradual Change Define the Structure of an Active Copper-Zinc-Alumina Catalyst for Methanol Synthesis

Arik Beck et al.

Summary: In this study, the activation process of a copper-zinc-alumina (CZA) catalyst was investigated using operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results revealed two major events, the reduction of copper and the ripening and re-oxidation of zinc, that significantly altered the catalyst's structure. Understanding these events is crucial for developing effective start-up protocols.

In Situ Spectroscopic Characterization and Theoretical Calculations Identify Partially Reduced ZnO1-x/Cu Interfaces for Methanol Synthesis from CO2

Xinyu Liu et al.

Summary: The active site of industrial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst used in CO2 hydrogenation has been debated, and in this study, inverse model catalysts were prepared to investigate the role of ZnO in catalytic activity. The results showed that the size of ZnO particles and the presence of oxygen vacancies at the ZnO/Cu interface are crucial for catalytic activation.

Dynamic State and Active Structure of Ni-Co Catalyst in Carbon Nanofiber Growth Revealed by in Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy

Hua Fan et al.

Summary: Alloy catalysts, particularly Ni-Co, exhibit superior effectiveness in the growth of carbon nanotubes/nanofibers compared to monometallic catalysts, but the origin of this superior performance has been unknown due to a lack of understanding of the active state and structure. Through in situ transmission electron microscopy studies, it was revealed that the active structure of the functioning catalyst is a dynamic Ni-Co metallic alloy, undergoing constant reshaping and periodic elongation/contraction. This insight was further supported by molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory calculations, providing a rationalization for the dynamic behavior of the catalyst and the growth mechanism of carbon nanotubes/nanofibers.

Influence of Hydrogen Pressure on the Structure of Platinum-Titania Catalysts

Arik Beck et al.

Summary: By examining the structure of a platinum-titania catalyst under different hydrogen environments, it was found that pressure significantly influences the hydrogen uptake kinetics and structural transformations of the catalyst. Higher pressures promote higher hydrogen uptake and prevent desorption of hydrogen from the catalyst, leading to a phase transformation from anatase to rutile.

Operando high-pressure investigation of size-controlled CuZn catalysts for the methanol synthesis reaction

Nuria J. Divins et al.

Summary: The study found that Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 and CuZn/SiO2 exhibit similar activity and methanol selectivity, but the methanol yield decreases with time on stream for the latter sample. X-ray absorption spectroscopy data during operation show the formation of a ZnO-rich shell on CuZn/SiO2, indicating the beneficial effect of even diluted Zn.

Structural Evolution of Cu/ZnO Catalysts during Water-Gas Shift Reaction: An In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Study

Zejian Dong et al.

Summary: This study used in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy to investigate the atomic-scale structural evolution of Cu/ZnO catalysts under water-gas shift reaction conditions. The research revealed that under a CO environment, Cu nanoparticles decompose and redistribute on ZnO supports, forming different phases of Cu species, while various metal-support interactions between Cu and ZnO were visualized under reaction conditions.

Phase Coexistence and Structural Dynamics of Redox Metal Catalysts Revealed by Operando TEM

Xing Huang et al.

Summary: Metal catalysts play a crucial role in industrial redox reactions, but the state and active sites of these catalysts under operating conditions are largely unknown. This study uses operando transmission electron microscopy to interrelate the structural dynamics of redox metal catalysts to their activity, revealing the importance of chemical dynamics in driving surface phase transitions and forming transient active sites during catalysis. Density functional theory calculations show that chemical dynamics play a key role in driving structural transformations even far from thermodynamic equilibrium.

Correlating the Structural Evolution of ZnO/Al2O3 to Spinel Zinc Aluminate with its Catalytic Performance in Propane Dehydrogenation

Manouchehr Nadjafi et al.

Summary: In this study, the catalytic activity for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) of Zn-based Al2O3 catalysts was correlated with their structure and structural evolution. Four-tetrahedral Zn sites near Al sites in the zinc aluminate spinel phase were found to be more active and selective in PDH compared to the supported ZnO wurtzite phase. ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst exhibited 77% selectivity to propene, but experienced irreversible activity loss due to Zn depletion on the surface after repeated PDH and air-regeneration cycles.

Following the structure of copper-zinc-alumina across the pressure gap in carbon dioxide hydrogenation

Arik Beck et al.

Summary: Copper-zinc-alumina catalysts are used in the industrial production of methanol from gases like carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, with high performance due to synergies between its components. Research has shown that the state and evolution of the catalyst are significantly influenced by its environment, especially with strong pressure dependence observed at pressures below 1 bar. These findings have broad implications for catalysis due to the general problem of pressure gaps in such processes.
