Elucidating the roles of acid site nature and strength in the direct conversion of levulinic acid into ethyl valerate: the case of Zr-modified beta zeolite-supported Pd catalysts

M. Munoz-Olasagasti et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of the nature and strength of surface acid sites on the properties of the catalyst used for the conversion of levulinic acid to valeric biofuels. The presence of strong Bronsted acid sites was critical for achieving high ethyl valerate yields, while three types of Lewis acid sites were also identified. Reutilization tests of the catalyst showed mild deactivation, and simple calcination treatment was adequate for the recovery of surface acidity but affected the reducibility of Pd species.

Boron Modified Cu/Al2O3 Catalysts for the Selective Reductive Amination of Levulinic Acid to N-Substituted Pyrrolidinones

Yuyao Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of boron doped Cu/Al2O3 catalysts were developed via kneading and impregnation method for the continuous reductive amination of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA). The Cu-10/AlB3O catalyst exhibited significantly improved catalytic performance for this reaction at low operation temperature. The excellent catalytic performance of boron doped Cu/Al2O3 catalysts was mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of well-dispersed Cu nanoparticles, appropriate surface Cu electronic state, and nearby surface acidic sites. Furthermore, Cu-10/AlB3O showed great stability during the reaction. This work provides a low-cost, efficient, and environmentally friendly heterogeneous catalytic system for the continuous production of N-substituted pyrrolidinones.
