Lightweight porous silica ceramics with ultra-low thermal conductivity and enhanced compressive strength

Xianxi Li et al.

Summary: The demand for high-performance lightweight thermal insulation materials in reusable spacecraft and vehicles has led to the development of porous silica ceramics with lightweight, ultra-low thermal conductivity, and enhanced compressive strength. By using different sizes of silica particles, the compressive strength and pore structure integrity of the ceramics were improved. These ceramics have a very low thermal conductivity and are suitable for use as thermal insulation materials in aerospace and space applications.

Oil soluble surfactants as efficient foam stabilizers

Fatmegyul Mustan et al.

Summary: The study compared the surface and foam properties of oil-soluble surfactants and water-soluble surfactants in sugar-rich solutions. It found that foams formed with oil-soluble surfactants in sugar-rich solutions remain stable for more than 10 days due to multilamellar vesicles increasing viscosity and slowing down water drainage. Foams formed with Span 60 are more stable compared to Brij 72, while those formed with Brij S20 are the least stable, being completely destroyed after 1 day at room temperature.

A new mullite foamed ceramic prepared by direct-foaming methods in parallel with a mechanical activation technique

Wenying Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the preparation and performance of mullite foamed ceramics using a direct-foaming method and mechanical activation technique. The smaller particle size obtained through mechanical activation improved the compressive strength of the ceramics. Finite element simulation confirmed the importance of dense strut structures in enhancing the strength of the ceramics. Additionally, a novel model combining thermal conduction and thermal radiation was proposed to predict the thermal conductivity of the ceramics at high temperatures.

Preparation of calcium hexaluminate porous ceramics by novel pectin based gelcasting freeze-drying method

Lei Yuan et al.

Summary: High-purity calcium hexaluminate (CA(6)) porous ceramics were prepared using a novel pectin based gelcasting freeze-drying method, with investigations on the effects of solid content on material properties. The pores in CA(6) ceramics were mainly formed through water molecules sublimation and organic decomposition during freeze-drying. The ceramics exhibited high apparent porosity, low bulk density, low thermal conductivity, and relatively high compressive strength, meeting requirements for functional and structural applications.

lePreparation of porous diatomite ceramics by an alkali treatment near room temperature

Yuki Nakashima et al.

Summary: Porous diatomite ceramics were prepared by alkali treatment without sintering, forming solid crosslinking near room temperature. The amount and concentration of KOH solution were found to affect properties such as porosity, strength, and thermal conductivity. Mixing a higher concentration of KOH solution with the raw powder promoted dissolution and formation of thicker necks between particles, resulting in comparable properties to sintered materials.
