Shareability of antibacterial and osteoblastic-proliferation activities of zinc-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in vitro

Masanori Okada et al.

Summary: Four types of zinc-doped hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were successfully prepared using calcium nitrate tetrahydrate as an anti-sintering agent during calcination at 600°C. The inclusion of zinc ions decreased the cell parameters of the nanoparticles, indicating substitution for calcium sites in the HAp crystal lattices. Zn-HAp nanoparticles containing 14.7% zinc ions showed unique biological activities at 0.1 mg/mL.

A METHOD TO IDENTIFY AND LOCALIZE A SINGLE HOT PARTICLE IN THE LUNGS USING AN ARRAY OF HIGH-PURITY GERMANIUM DETECTORS FOR IMPROVED ESTIMATE OF THE DEPOSITED ACTIVITY

O. Aviv et al.

Summary: A new method has been developed to identify and localize a single hot particle in the lungs using an array of four high-purity germanium detectors. The method calculates a set of three count rate ratios generated by each individual detector in the array to determine whether the measured deposition can be associated with a hot particle. It was found that using the appropriate detector efficiencies can significantly reduce the bias associated with activity determination.

Effect of different thermal activation on hydroxyapatite to eliminate mercury from aqueous solutions in continuous adsorption system

Mehdi Bahrami et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of modified hydroxyapatite by thermal activation in removing mercury from aqueous solution. Heat-treated bones showed superior adsorption capability, especially bone heated at 500 degrees C. Effective parameters for mercury elimination were identified, with optimal sorption occurring at pH 7, an initial mercury concentration of 80 mg/L, a bed height of 6 cm, and a flow rate of 0.5 mL/min. Various models were used to describe the packed-bed adsorption, highlighting the remarkable capability of modified bones to remove mercury ions in a dynamic system.

Copper-Doped Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Powders: Dopant Release, Cytotoxicity and Antibacterial Properties

Aurelie Jacobs et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties of Cu-doped Biphasic Calcium Phosphate (BCP) powders, showing no cytotoxicity and the release of less than 12 ppm of copper into the biological medium. The Cu-doped biomaterials exhibited strong antibacterial activity against MSSA, MRSA and E. coli, releasing approximately 2.5 ppm after 24 hours of incubation. The antibacterial effect was also influenced by the culture medium used, with different concentrations of Cu2+ required to kill bacteria in different mediums.

Freeze-drying of nanoparticles: How to overcome colloidal instability by formulation and process optimization

Eduard Trenkenschuh et al.

Summary: Lyophilization of nanoparticle suspensions is a promising technology for improving stability and providing new routes of administration in solid state. Despite being considered a gentle drying process, freeze-drying can cause stresses leading to physical instability. Nanoparticles vary in their sensitivity to lyophilization stress due to their heterogeneous physico-chemical properties, but basic concepts can still be deduced.
