Zhaoqi Niu et al.

Summary: In this study, reactive POSS was synthesized to modify high silica fiber cloth and phenolic resin, leading to improved ablative properties and interfacial strength of silica fiber reinforced phenolic resin composites. The modified composites exhibited higher flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength, while having lower thermal conductivity and ablative rate.

A hyperbranched P/N/B-containing oligomer as multifunctional flame retardant for epoxy resins

Siqi Huo et al.

Summary: This study presents an effective method to create transparent epoxy thermosets with outstanding mechanical, dielectric, and fire-retardant properties by incorporating a P/N/B-containing hyperbranched oligomer. The addition of the hyperbranched additive improves the glass-transition temperature, optical transmittance, mechanical strength, and toughness of the epoxy resin, while reducing the dielectric constant, loss, heat release, and smoke generation during combustion. These findings have significant implications for the development of high-performance flame-retardant epoxy resins.

Highly electrically conductive graphene papers via catalytic graphitization

Huanqin Peng et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient catalytic graphitization approach to fabricate highly conductive graphene papers at lower annealing temperature. The use of boron catalyst facilitates the recovery of structural defects and improves the degree of graphitization. This effective strategy could also be helpful in the fabrication of other kinds of highly conductive graphene macroscopic materials.

Improving ablation resistant properties of epoxy-silicone rubber composites via boron catalyzed graphitization and ceramization

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, ablation resistant epoxy-silicone rubber composites were prepared, and the influence of boron on charring and ceramization process was systematically studied. After incorporating boron particles, the heat resistance and ablation resistance of the composite materials improved significantly, benefiting from the pore structure, strength, composition, and thermal conductivity of the ablation layers. The addition of 2.5wt% boron increased the maximum thermal decomposition temperature by 12.31%, and reduced the linear ablation rate and mass ablation rate by 34.86% and 36.11% respectively, compared to the control rubber composites. The catalytic mechanism suggests that the introduction of boron not only lowers the SiC generation temperature to promote ceramization but also compensates for carbon lattice defects to promote graphitization. This work is expected to provide new ideas and a theoretical basis for designing and preparing ablation resistant silicone-based composites.

Effect of organo-modified montmorillonite nanoclay on mechanical, thermal and ablation behavior of carbon fiber/phenolic resin composites

Golla Rama Rao et al.

Summary: Experimental study on the mechanical, thermal and ablation properties of carbon phenolic composites reinforced with different weight percentages of organo-modified montmorillonite nanoclay revealed that the addition of nanoclay improved certain properties up to 2 wt.%, beyond which the properties decreased. The addition of nanoclay also led to an increase in the mass ablation rate of the composites.
