The role of sodium and sulfate sources on the rheology and hydration of C3A polymorphs

Jose S. Andrade Neto et al.

Summary: Experimental study revealed that the higher reactivity of orthorhombic C(3)A in sulfate-containing solutions is mainly attributed to the differences in crystal structure rather than the presence of sodium ions in the pore solution. The hydration process of C(3)A was influenced by the type of sulfate present, with hemihydrate accelerating ettringite formation and sulfate depletion in orthorhombic C(3)A. Overall, the presence of hemihydrate resulted in early stiffening of all C(3)A-hemihydrate pastes.

Solubility and speciation of iron in cementitious systems

Fabio E. Furcas et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences between dissolved iron concentrations in cement pore solutions and thermodynamic predictions, potentially due to unknown iron complexes or stable intermediate phases causing experimental results to exceed the thermodynamic predictions.

High-ferrite Portland cement with slag: Hydration, microstructure, and resistance to sulfate attack at elevated temperature

H. M. Yang et al.

Summary: High-ferrite Portland cement shows satisfactory corrosion resistance to sulfate attack, and the hydration process is greatly affected by temperature. Slag dosage above 40% leads to hydration process controlled by different stages, showing better sulfate attack resistance compared to pure ordinary Portland cement.

Revisiting the iron-rich ordinary Portland cement towards valorisation of wastes: study of Fe-to-Al ratio on the clinker production and the hydration reaction

David Arino Montoya et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of substituting aluminum for iron on OPC clinker production, finding that Fe to Al replacement did not substantially affect melt formation at usual production temperatures. The substitution promoted the formation of alite and ferrite while reducing the formation of aluminate and belite in clinker phase assemblage. The Fe-rich cements showed longer setting times and slightly lower mechanical strength.

Summary: This study vitrified the surface of C(4)AF by spray granulation and investigated the early hydration reaction of surface vitrified brownmillerite (SVB). The crystallization mechanism of hydration product C(4)AF was proposed based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results.

Iron incorporation in synthetic precipitated calcium silicate hydrates

Jirawan Siramanont et al.

Summary: The effect of Fe3+ on the precipitation of synthetic calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) under controlled conditions has been evaluated. The presence of initial ferrihydrite restricts the incorporation of iron into C-S-H, with a non-uniform distribution of Fe3+ when initial ferrihydrite is present.

Fe(II) interaction with cement phases: Method development, wet chemical studies and X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Summary: The study found that Fe(II) oxidation rate is fast under alkaline conditions, and a methodology was developed to stabilize Fe(II) for sorption experiments and spectroscopy analysis. Results showed that C-S-H can uptake a small portion of Fe(II), while Fe(II) incorporation by AFm phases was not indicated. XAFS spectroscopy revealed Fe(II) binding in an octahedral coordination environment with C-S-H.

Hydration of ferrite-rich Portland cement: Evaluation of Fe-hydrates and Fe uptake in calcium-silicate-hydrates

Natsumi Noguchi et al.

Summary: The hydration process and pore structure in ferrite-rich cement (FC) were investigated through experimental and thermodynamic modelling techniques. It was found that FC had a higher hydration degree at the early stage compared to ordinary Portland cement (OPC), but OPC exceeded FC after 14 days. XRD-TG results showed similar Fe uptake by C-S-H in both FC and OPC, and the thermodynamic model confirmed the formation of a high amount of Fe phases in FC.
