Tailoring strain-hardening behavior of high-strength Engineered Cementitious Composites (ECC) using hybrid silica sand and artificial geopolymer aggregates

Ling-Yu Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of hybrid artificial geopolymer aggregates (GPA) and natural silica sand in high-strength engineered cementitious composites (HS-ECC) to tailor their tensile strain-hardening behavior. The results show that increasing the replacement ratio of silica sand with GPA improves the tensile ductility, crack control ability, and energy absorption of HS-ECC. The reaction between low alkalinity GPA and the cementitious matrix enhances the GPA/matrix interface and induces crack formation in the HS-ECC system.

Summary: This study developed a new type of ultra-high-performance seawater sea-sand concrete (UHP-SSC) by using ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers to address the challenges of sustainable marine and coastal construction. Experimental results showed that increasing fiber content in UHP-SSC significantly improved tensile strength and strain capacity while slightly decreasing compressive strength. A probabilistic model was successfully used to estimate the allowed tensile strain of UHP-SSC based on crack width and cumulative probability in practical applications.
