Upslope migration of snow avalanches in a warming climate

Florie Giacona et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the Vosges Mountains in France experienced a significant change in snow avalanche activity from 1850 to 1920, with a decrease in the number of avalanches, reduction in size, shorter seasons, and migration towards higher elevations in response to winter warming.

Characteristics and hazards of different snow avalanche types in a continental snow climate region in the Central Tianshan Mountains

Jiansheng Hao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and hazards of different types of avalanches in the mid-altitude region of the Central Tianshan Mountains, using data collected over four snow seasons. Results showed that surface-layer dry snow avalanches had the highest avalanche hazard degree in the continental snow climate region, and the overall avalanche hazard exhibited a single peak pattern during the snow season, with the greatest hazard occurring in the second half of February.

A regional spatiotemporal analysis of large magnitude snow avalanches using tree rings

Erich Peitzsch et al.

Summary: The study utilized dendrochronological methods to investigate the historical patterns of large magnitude avalanches in the northern Rocky Mountains region of the United States. Results showed variations in avalanche activity across different time periods and spatial scales, highlighting the importance of sample size, scale, and spatial extent in deriving a regional chronology of large magnitude avalanche events from tree-ring records.
