Towards the progress of ecological restoration and economic development in China's Loess Plateau and strategy for more sustainable development

Li Yurui et al.

Summary: The Loess Plateau in China has made remarkable achievements in ecological restoration and economic development since 2000, but still faces environmental fragility and regional development lag. To achieve a more sustainable Loess Plateau, coordinated and collaborative efforts are needed at multiple hierarchical levels, emphasizing human-environment interactions at different levels.

Effects of the Growth Substrate on the Restoration of Stipa capillata L. Populations on Refuse Dumps

A. N. Kupriyanov et al.

Summary: A 5-year experiment in the Vinogradovskii coal pit in Kemerovo oblast showed that the variant with loamy undersoil provides the best conditions for the growth and development of Stipa capillata, while the variant with fertile topsoil is more susceptible to weed competition. The control group exhibited a Stipa capillata community in the later years, likely originating from seeds dispersed from the experimental groups.

Does crop rotation affect soil organic matter stratification in tillage systems?

Leonardo Deiss et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of tillage practices and crop rotation on soil organic matter (SOM) stratification and accumulation. The findings suggest that reducing tillage intensity and incorporating perennial forages in crop rotation may lead to increased organic resource abundance and drive SOM accrual, benefitting soil health, plant roots, and soil organisms in agricultural systems.

Effects of Crop and Grass Intercropping on the Soil Environment in the Karst Area

Qinqin Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that the intercropping mode led to changes in soil physical and chemical factors, such as decreased soil bulk density, increased soil water content and total porosity, and higher organic matter content. The correlation analysis also revealed some relationships between soil properties.

Decoupling of soil nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics along a temperature gradient on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Qiqi Tan et al.

Summary: The research found that with increasing temperature, soil nitrogen content and storage decreased while soil phosphorus content and stocks remained stable, leading to a decreased soil N:P ratio along the temperature gradient, indicating that soil N and P dynamics are decoupled under the condition of increasing temperature.

Delimitation of supervision zones based on the soil property characteristics in a reclaimed opencast coal mine dump on the Loess Plateau, China

Yanjun Guan et al.

Summary: By measuring soil properties and analyzing their spatial distribution, this study identified the basis for delimiting supervision zones and proposed specific restoration measures to improve the quality of reclaimed soil.

Does Complex Soil Enhance Grain Yield under Cropping System?

Jiakun Yan et al.

Summary: The continuous use of biochar and soft rocks for two years was found to increase soil organic acid contents (especially oxalic acid), reduce soil pH, raise soil available phosphorus content, and enhance licorice biomass.
