Physicochemical properties and stoichiometry of Mollisols in responses to tillage and fertilizer management

Jinxi He et al.

Summary: Understanding the impact of tillage and fertilizer management on soil physical properties, nutrient concentrations, and stoichiometry is essential for assessing the ecological consequences of agricultural practices. Results from this study showed that deep tillage significantly increased the soil C: N ratio, while organic fertilizer had a greater impact on soil nutrient concentrations and stoichiometry, playing a crucial role in improving nutrients and maintaining ecosystem stability in Mollisols.

Distribution and determinants of organic carbon and available nutrients in tropical paddy soils revealed by high-resolution sampling

Huan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that low-yield paddy soils in southern China have low levels of soil organic carbon, alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen, and available potassium, but high levels of available phosphorus. The use of double- and triple-cropping systems can effectively improve soil nutrient status, enhance the organic carbon pool, and increase rice production.

Bedrock and climate jointly control the phosphorus status of subtropical forests along two elevational gradients

Xianjin He et al.

Summary: The supply of soil phosphorus (P) in subtropical forests in southern China is influenced by both climate and bedrock types. Bedrock P concentration has a greater impact on plant and soil P variation than climate does. There is a stronger nutrient uplift effect on P in P-poor transects. Incorporating local-scale parent material properties into modeling frameworks can significantly improve predictions of ecosystem P status and its responses to climate change.

Spatial Distribution of Soil Nutrients in Farmland in a Hilly Region of the Pearl River Delta in China Based on Geostatistics and the Inverse Distance Weighting Method

Rumi Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial distribution of plant nutrients in soil in a hilly region of the Pearl River Delta in China. The results showed different distribution trends of various nutrients in the soil, providing support for the delimitation of basic farmland protection areas, the formulation of land use spatial planning, and the formulation of accurate farmland protection policies.

Spatial changes and driving variables of topsoil organic carbon stocks in Chinese croplands under different fertilization strategies

Fengling Ren et al.

Summary: The impact of different fertilization strategies on soil organic carbon changes is influenced by the current status of agricultural regions. Combining chemical fertilizer with manure significantly increased SOC levels, especially in NEC and NWC regions. There were significant differences in SOC change rates among treatments in NC and NWC.

Stoichiometry of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in soil: Effects of agricultural land use and climate at a continental scale

Shengmeng Zheng et al.

Summary: Soil carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents and their stoichiometric ratios in response to agricultural use were generally similar across the four climate zones, with P increasing and C:N:P ratios decreasing. More intensive agricultural practices and stronger biological and geochemical processes in warmer and wetter zones led to more pronounced differences in soil C, N, and P contents and their stoichiometric ratios among land-use types, compared to cooler and drier climates.

Interactive effects of land use and soil erosion on soil organic carbon in the dry-hot valley region of southern China

Yawen Li et al.

Summary: The study evaluated changes in soil erosion and SOC contents under three different land use types in a dry-hot valley in southern China. Results showed significant impacts of land use types on SOC and TSN contents, with forest land having the highest values. The interaction between soil erosion and land use significantly influenced SOC variability in the soil surface layer.

Global patterns and drivers of soil total phosphorus concentration

Xianjin He et al.

Summary: Soil total phosphorus concentration varies significantly among different parent material types, soil orders, biomes, and continents, with a wide global range from 1.4 to 9630.0 mg kg(-1). The most important predictors of soil total P concentration are soil organic carbon concentration, parent material type, mean annual temperature, and soil sand content. Predicted soil total P concentrations increase with latitude, but vary widely among regions with similar latitudes due to regional differences in parent material, topography, and climate conditions.
