Direct conversion of yellow mealworm larvae into biodiesel via a non-catalytic transesterification platform

Dong-Jun Lee et al.

Summary: A sustainable valorization platform for organic waste has yet to be fully developed. This study focuses on a new valorization route that converts food/agricultural waste to biodiesel using yellow mealworm larvae. The non-catalytic conversion process shows high tolerance against water and impurities, making it a promising method for biodiesel production.

Biohydrogen production from furniture waste via catalytic gasification in air over Ni-loaded Ultra-stable Y-type zeolite

Soheil Valizadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the air gasification of furniture waste using nickel-loaded ultra-stable Y-type zeolites to produce biohydrogen. The effects of various factors, such as SiO2/Al2O3 ratio, nickel loading, and reaction temperature, on the catalytic gasification process were examined. The results showed that a nickel loading of 5wt% on the zeolite catalyst led to higher gas yield and hydrogen concentration, as well as lower concentrations of harmful compounds. By optimizing the reaction conditions, it is possible to transform furniture waste into hydrogen-rich syngas with reduced pollution levels.

Towards triglycerides-based biorefineries: Hydrolysis-reforming-hydrogenation in one-pot over Ni/γ-Al2O3 based catalysts

Camilo Aurelio B. Crisostomo et al.

Summary: The study assessed the efficiency of Ni/gamma-Al2O3 and Ni-Sn/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts for hydrolysis-reforming-hydrogenation reactions in soybean oil, showing that gamma-Al2O3 was the best catalyst for hydrolysis and Ni/gamma-Al2O3 calcined at 300 degrees C was the best monometallic catalyst for stearic acid production. The addition of tin improved the reactions by enhancing H-2 production and selectivity towards saturated fatty acids.

Insights in the biocatalyzed hydrolysis, esterification and transesterification of waste cooking oil with a vegetable lipase

Paula S. Mateos et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the biocatalytic performance of a lipase obtained from Araujia sericifera latex in hydrolysis and esterification reactions with sunflower waste cooking oil. The results showed that the lipase had high enzymatic activity in hydrolyzing and esterifying the oil, with over 90% conversion of free fatty acids achieved using short chain alcohols.

Fast hydropyrolysis of biomass Conversion: A comparative review

Shinyoung Oh et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that fast hydropyrolysis is a promising technology for converting biomass into liquid fuels, producing more aromatic hydrocarbons and reducing the oxygen content of bio-oil. Current research focuses on both non-catalytic and catalytic fast hydropyrolysis processes, as well as efforts to combine fast hydropyrolysis with hydrotreatment processes. Future research directions and challenges in fast hydropyrolysis are also discussed.

Converting waste cooking oil to biodiesel in China: Environmental impacts and economic feasibility

Yuanhao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the environmental impacts and economic competitiveness of biodiesel production from waste cooking oil in China using life cycle assessment and life cycle cost modeling. The results showed that compared to conventional fossil diesel, waste cooking oil-based biodiesel has lower endpoint environmental impacts but higher impacts on climate change and other factors. The life cycle cost of the biodiesel is mainly influenced by waste cooking oil collection.

Platinum-free photoelectrochromic devices working with copper-based electrolytes for ultrastable smart windows

Luca Lavagna et al.

Summary: A new photoelectrochromic system has been proposed in this study, with improved device performance achieved by replacing key components, including using graphene nanoplatelets to replace platinum for the counter electrode, and choosing a copper-based redox pair to replace the iodine-based mediator. Compared to traditional designs, this system exhibits higher performance and long-term stability.
