Serum soluble Klotho is inversely related to coronary artery calcification assessed by intravascular ultrasound in patients with stable coronary artery disease

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between soluble Klotho and coronary artery calcification in stable CAD patients, finding that high serum Klotho levels were associated with a lower degree of coronary artery calcification. Specifically, patients with high Klotho had a significantly lower calcium index and a higher prevalence of low calcium index compared to those with low Klotho. Additionally, serum Klotho levels correlated inversely with calcification index and this association was more pronounced in patients with decreased renal function.

These mechanisms could involve direct and indirect effects on pancreatic ss cells, as well as the stimulation of pro-inflammatory factors synthesis, potentially mediated by the binding of FGF23 to noncanonical receptor complexes.
