Alginate/PVA-based hydrogel matrices with Echinacea purpurea extract as a new approach to dermal wound healing

Katarzyna Bialik-Was et al.

Summary: Sodium alginate/poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels containing Echinacea purpurea extract with antioxidant activity were developed, and the swelling ability of the hydrogels increased with the extract contents. The presence of extract influenced the morphology of the hydrogels, with higher extract percentages leading to more porous structures. Additionally, degradation tests showed a gradual increase in conductivity over time, indicating the expected rate of material degradation.

Understanding the Effect of Conformational Rigidity on Rheological Behavior and Formation of Polysaccharide-Based Hybrid Hydrogels

Chang-Sheng Wang et al.

Summary: The importance of conformational rigidity on macroscopic rheological properties was demonstrated through the comparison of two model polysaccharides, xanthan gum and hyaluronic acid. Xanthan gum, with its rigid tertiary structure and network formation, exhibits stronger shear thinning and solid-like behavior compared to the relatively flexible tertiary conformation of hyaluronic acid. Additionally, xanthan gum shows better resistance against environmental changes and the ability to form gels with chitosan via electrostatic interactions, which is not possible for hyaluronic acid due to its flexible tertiary conformation.
