High Performance of PVA Nanocomposite Reinforced by Janus-like Asymmetrically Oxidized Graphene: Synergetic Effect of H-bonding Interaction and Interfacial Crystallization

Ning Zhang et al.

Summary: Introducing a novel Janus-like amphiphilic graphene oxide (JGO) has allowed for both hydrogen bonding and interfacial crystallization to be constructed between JGO sheets and the PVA matrix. The PVA-JGO dried films show a 264% improvement in toughness at a JGO loading of 1 wt%, and the corresponding PVA-JGO swollen hydrogel films display a simultaneous improvement of nearly 8 times increase in tensile strength and 20 times increase in toughness compared to traditional PVA-GO nanocomposite. Multiple interfacial interactions and macromolecule crystal networks can be concurrent in PVA nanocomposites by innovative modification of nanofillers, providing a new strategy to construct PVA nanocomposites with high strength and high toughness.

Mechanisms of reinforcement of PVA-Based nanocomposites by hBN nanosheets

Weimiao Wang et al.

Summary: A systematic study was conducted on the reinforcement of PVA by hBN nanosheets produced by liquid-phase exfoliation, revealing that BNNSs with larger aspect ratio exhibit the highest level of reinforcement, although a decline was observed at the highest loadings. Raman spectroscopy can be used to evaluate the distribution of BNNSs in nanocomposites and monitor stress transfer to BNNSs from the polymer matrix.

Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots for developing highly flame retardant poly (vinyl alcohol) composite films

Shu-juan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped fluorescent carbon dots (N,P-CDs) were synthesized and incorporated into PVA matrix to prepare flame retardant composite films. The addition of a small amount of N,P-CDs significantly improved the flame retardancy and thermal stability of the films without affecting transparency, and endowed the films with UV absorption ability.

Green cross-linked coir cellulose nanocrystals/poly (vinyl alcohol) composite films with enhanced water resistance, mechanical properties, and thermal stability

Xin Rao et al.

Summary: Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) based materials have limitations in water resistance, but in this study, a coir cellulose nanocrystal (CCNC) and oxalic acid (OA) were used to prepare a CCNC/OA/PVA composite film with improved mechanical properties, water resistance, and thermal stability. The synergistic effect of physical interaction and hydrophobic ester linkages was suggested to be the reason for the improvements.
