A Source Study of the Mw 7.0 Acapulco, Mexico, Earthquake of 8 September 2021

Arturo Iglesias et al.

Summary: The Acapulco earthquake of 2021 occurred along the Mexican subduction thrust, with the rupture propagating towards the northeast. The seismic slip and coupling ratio suggest a high degree of coupling between the tectonic plates in the region, and large earthquakes may be expected due to the periodicity observed in the southeast seismic gap.

Interseismic coupling along the Mexican subduction zone seen by InSAR and GNSS

Louise Maubant et al.

Summary: In this study, a method for spatial estimation of surface deformation in the Mexican subduction zone is proposed by combining InSAR and GNSS data. The results show large lateral variations in interseismic deformation. InSAR data significantly improves the resolution of the estimates compared to a model based only on GNSS data. The study also finds a high coupling ratio in the Jalisco area in the absence of large transient events.

Rapid finite-fault analysis of large Mexico earthquakes using teleseismic P waves

C. Mendoza et al.

Summary: A rapid finite-fault inversion procedure is proposed to estimate coseismic slip following large earthquakes in Mexico, using teleseismic P waves obtained in near real time. The automated analysis allows for quick derivation of preliminary slip models within hours of the event, useful for earthquake early alerting and response efforts. The procedure was successfully applied to two large earthquakes, demonstrating its potential for timely slip model retrieval.

Summary: The La Crucecita earthquake occurred on a deep megathrust, generating a long-lived tsunami, which highlights important aspects of megathrust behavior and related hazards. With no shallow slip considered, the rupture is within 15-30 km depth.

Regional Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Analysis for the Mexican Subduction Zone From Stochastic Slip Models

Summary: The Mexican subduction zone is prone to large earthquakes and potentially disastrous tsunamis, with limited tsunami observations available. This study utilized probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis to estimate maximum tsunami amplitudes and critical hazard points along the coasts of Jalisco, Colima, Michoacan, Guerrero, and Oaxaca.
