New Coronavirus Variants are Creating More Challenges to Global Healthcare System: A Brief Report on the Current Knowledge

Salsabil Islam et al.

Summary: The coronavirus naturally mutates over time, giving rise to new variants that are more contagious and destructive. Some variants are capable of evading treatment. The Delta variant is the most dangerous, with high transmissibility, disease severity, and mortality rate. The recently identified Omicron variant's transmissibility and resistance are still unclear. Supplying oxygen, medication, vaccines, and devices is a challenge for poor and developing countries during epidemic waves. Slowing down transmission, mass vaccination, vaccine redesign, re-compiling action plans, and adhering to safety guidelines can be effective solutions to the new challenges.

Impact of door opening on the risk of surgical site infections in an operating room with mixing ventilation

Cong Wang et al.

Summary: Operating rooms often have door openings connected to uncontrolled areas that are more contaminated, and opening the door may lead to an inflow of contaminated air, degrading air cleanliness and increasing the risk of surgical site infections. Numerical study showed that a single door opening could increase overall contamination in the OR by 2.1 CFU/m(3), with different contamination levels at the surgical site. Temporarily reducing OR exhaust flow during door operation was found to effectively minimize the impact of door openings on infection risk.

Airborne virus transmission via respiratory droplets: Effects of droplet evaporation and sedimentation Majid Rezaei and Roland R. Netz

Majid Rezaei et al.

Summary: This article reviews the physical and chemical factors that control droplet evaporation and sedimentation times, which play important roles in determining the risk of infection from airborne respiratory droplets. Evaporation and sedimentation of droplets are crucial in understanding the transmission of infectious diseases through the air.

Effect of individually controlled personalized ventilation on cross-contamination due to respiratory activities

Elvire Katramiz et al.

Summary: The study found that infected individuals using lower PV flow rates in tandem seating and higher flow rates in face-to-face seating can achieve minimal exposure levels in an office setting. Additionally, the average inhaled intake fraction was 31% lower for face-to-face seating during coughing and 86% lower during breathing compared to tandem seating.
