Decay rates of two tracer gases compared to DNA-tagged liquid aerosol tracer particles: Impact of varying dilution rate and filtration

Ilan Arvelo et al.

Summary: Current gas and aerosol tracers cannot accurately simulate the emission and transmission of liquid aerosols containing pathogens indoors. This study evaluated the use of a liquid aerosol tracer containing synthetic DNA to simulate the particle size distribution of aerosols containing DNA. The results showed that DNA-tagged tracer aerosols can effectively simulate the emission and transport of liquid aerosols in a room, and the decay rate of DNA tracer concentrations can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of aerosol control strategies.

Investigating the Sources of Urban Air Pollution Using Low-Cost Air Quality Sensors at an Urban Atlanta Site

Laura Hyesung Yang et al.

Summary: Advances in low-cost sensors (LCS) have provided opportunities to characterize air quality in finer spatial and temporal resolutions. In this study, LCS were deployed in Atlanta, GA, alongside research-grade instruments to investigate air pollution sources using non-negative matrix factorization (NMF). Results show that both normalized and non-normalized LCS datasets can resolve primary organic aerosol (POA) factors, while normalization can provide factors with more diverse compositions and resolve secondary organic aerosol (SOA) as well.

Development and application of an indoor carbon dioxide metric

Andrew Persily

Summary: Indoor carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations have long been used to evaluate indoor air quality (IAQ) and ventilation, as well as to discuss the risk of airborne infectious disease transmission. However, the significance of indoor CO2 levels, ventilation, and IAQ is often misunderstood. This paper presents an approach to estimate space-specific CO2 levels that can serve as a metric for outdoor ventilation rates.

Performance characterization of low-cost air quality sensors for off-grid deployment in rural Malawi

Ashley S. Bittner et al.

Summary: This study explores the calibration and validation methods for low-cost gas and particulate matter monitors before deployment in Malawi. The research finds that the k-nearest neighbors hybrid model provides the best performance for calibrating electrochemical gas sensors and is also transferable to deployment data in Malawi. Additionally, the study reveals that environmental conditions significantly affect the performance of the OPC-N2 optical particle counter.

Residential air-change rates: A critical review

William W. Nazaroff

Summary: Air-change rate is an important parameter for residential air quality, influenced by factors such as weather, building envelope leakiness, and mechanical ventilation systems. Occupancy-related factors like window opening, exhaust, and heating also affect air-change rates. Studies show a central tendency and varying range of air-change rates, but challenges remain in understanding time variations and tracer-gas measurement techniques.

Characteristics of indoor air pollutants and estimation of their exposure dose

Sangita Ghatge Goel et al.

Summary: This study compared indoor air pollution sources in rural areas of developing countries and found that incense sticks, dhoop, mosquito coils, and charcoal have high pollution potential. Dhoop was found to emit the highest concentration of metal Sb, and decay rates varied among different sources. Children and young adults were identified as the most vulnerable groups to PM emissions from dhoop and incense sticks.

Wolfgang Schade et al.

Summary: The dispersion of small aerosols in a concert hall was experimentally studied to evaluate the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection during a concert. The results showed that under certain conditions of fresh air ventilation, aerosols and CO2 did not accumulate within a hazardous range.

Exhaled CO2 as a COVID-19 Infection Risk Proxy for Different Indoor Environments and Activities

Zhe Peng et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of CO2 as a proxy for SARS-CoV-2 concentrations indoors, deriving analytical expressions for CO2-based risk proxies and emphasizing the importance of keeping CO2 levels low to optimize ventilation protection. The research shows that the level of CO2 corresponding to a given absolute infection risk varies significantly across different environments and activities, providing more specific and practical recommendations for low-cost CO2-based indoor infection risk monitoring despite uncertainties in infection risk estimates.

Investigation of potential aerosol transmission and infectivity of SARS-CoV-2 through central ventilation systems

Leonard F. Pease et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the concentrations and probabilities of infection for both building interior and exterior exposure sources using a well-mixed model in a multiroom building served by a central air handling system. It found that slower air change rates reduce infectivity in connected rooms, filtration lowers the concentration and probability of infection the most in connected rooms, and increasing the outdoor air to 33% or using MERV-13 filter can significantly decrease infectivity in connected rooms.
