The Heat-Flux Imbalance: The Role of Advection and Dispersive Fluxes on Heat Transport Over Thermally Heterogeneous Terrain

Travis Morrison et al.

Summary: This study quantifies spatial heterogeneity using data from the Idealized Planar-Array experiment and analyzes the heat-flux imbalance. The results show different biases in the estimation of turbulence flux under different meteorological conditions, and indicate that mean air temperature heterogeneity leads to strong bulk advection and dispersive fluxes.

STATISTICAL LEARNING OF NONLINEAR STOCHASTIC DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS FROM NONSTATIONARY TIME SERIES USING VARIATIONAL CLUSTERING

Vyacheslav Boyko et al.

Summary: Data-driven stochastic parameterization methods use observational data to improve prediction systems. This paper introduces a novel parameterization framework by combining stochastic differential equations with clustering methods, which is applied to develop nonstationary and data-driven stochastic models for multiscale dynamical systems.

Multiscale Shear Forcing of Turbulence in the Nocturnal Boundary Layer: A Statistical Analysis

Vyacheslav Boyko et al.

Summary: This study investigates intermittent turbulence in the lower nocturnal boundary layer, analyzing the relationship between the vertical gradients of sub-mean scales and turbulence kinetic energy. The results show that intermittent turbulence occurs when the intensity of sub-mesoscale motions exceeds 10% of the mean kinetic energy in strong stratification.

The Impact of Surface Temperature Heterogeneity on Near-Surface Heat Transport

Travis Morrison et al.

Summary: Experimental closure of the surface energy balance during convective periods was investigated using data from the Idealized Horizontal Planar Array experiment. The study found high spatial variability in sensible heat fluxes during convective periods and proposed a conceptual model based on local surface temperature heterogeneities to explain the observed advection phenomena.

Small-Scale Spatial Variation of the Nocturnal Wind Field

L. Mahrt et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial variability of the nocturnal wind field and modifies the bulk formula for the spatially-averaged heat flux. The results show a strong dependence on topography in the observed small-scale variability of the wind field, which is important even with weak topography. The design of future observational networks needs to consider the impact of topography on wind vector observations.
