Temporal change of prokaryotic community in surface sediments of the Chukchi Sea

Jianxing Sun et al.

Summary: Global warming can impact microbial ecosystem functions by changing microbial diversity, composition, and interactions. A study comparing the community compositions, assembly processes, and microbial interactions of prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea) in the Chukchi Sea between the warming year of 2014 and 2016 found that prokaryotic diversity was significantly higher in 2016. The assembly processes of archaea were predominantly driven by stochastic processes, while bacterial assembly processes were mainly shaped by deterministic processes in 2016. Bacteria played a more important role in maintaining prokaryotic community stability compared to archaea. Both bacterial and archaeal community variations showed significant correlations with environmental factors, despite little change in these factors from 2014 to 2016. This study provides new insights into microbial responses to climate warming in marine sediments.

Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification of hypersaline wastewater by a robust bacterium Halomonas salifodinae from a repeated-batch acclimation

Jie Hu et al.

Summary: Isolation of a simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) bacterium Halomonas salifodinae through repeated-batch acclimation showed efficient nitrogen removal with superior activity inhibition resistance compared to other strains, attributed to increased relative abundance of halotolerant populations during the repeated-batch process.

Engineering Halomonas bluephagenesis as a chassis for bioproduction from starch

Yina Lin et al.

Summary: Halomonas bluephagenesis has been engineered to produce multiple products using costly glucose under open unsterile conditions. The potential to replace traditional enzyme producers with H. bluephagenesis as an extracellular hydrolytic enzyme producer is being investigated. This modified strain shows robust growth on low-cost substrates like starch, showcasing its potential for cost-effective production of enzymes and various products.

Are the Closely Related Cobetia Strains of Different Species?

Yulia Noskova et al.

Summary: Marine bacteria of the genus Cobetia, with promising unique enzymes and secondary metabolites, are difficult to differentiate due to their ecophysiology diversity and high homology in 16S rRNA sequences. Additional molecular markers, such as species-specific coding sequences for enzymes, can help distinguish different species within the Cobetia genus. Further research is needed to determine whether certain Cobetia species belong to the same or different species.
