Model predictive control and moving horizon estimation for adaptive optimal bolus feeding in high-throughput cultivation of E. coli

Jong Woo Kim et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the application of a nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) and moving horizon estimation (MHE) framework for optimal operation of E. coli fed-batch cultivations. The challenges of implementing the model-based monitoring and control framework are addressed, including the pulsed form input, imbalanced measurement frequencies, and deciding the reactor configuration. The key elements and background theory of the implementation are presented with in silico simulations for bacterial fed-batch cultivations.

A comparative review of multi-rate moving horizon estimation schemes for bioprocess applications

Mohamed Elsheikh et al.

Summary: Advanced control and monitoring of bioprocesses rely on accurate state and parameter information, which can be challenging due to the time-varying behavior and difficulty of obtaining online measurements. Therefore, the selection and tuning of estimation algorithms are crucial for designing reliable monitoring tools. By comparing Moving Horizon Estimation schemes for bioprocesses, guidelines for selecting an appropriate estimator can be provided based on their performance in dealing with process uncertainty and multi-rate measurements.

Robotic integration enables autonomous operation of laboratory scale stirred tank bioreactors with model-driven process analysis

Holger Morschett et al.

Summary: The classic stirred tank bioreactor (STR) remains the gold standard for bioprocess development at a laboratory scale due to its geometric similarity to large-scale production plants and excellent possibilities for process control. However, automation and deriving key performance indicators (KPIs) are often manual processes in bioreactors. By automating a widely used parallelized STR setup with a liquid handling system, a flexible modular platform was created for autonomous operation of bioreactors without the need for an operator.

Review on model predictive control: an engineering perspective

Max Schwenzer et al.

Summary: Model-based predictive control (MPC) is an advanced control method that predicts the future behavior of a controlled system using a process model. By implicitly determining the control law, MPC shifts the focus of controller design towards modeling the controlled process. With applications in various engineering fields, MPC reduces the initial hurdles for control and can even handle systems beyond the capabilities of traditional feedback controllers.
