Different forms of selenium supplementation in fish feed: The bioavailability, nutritional functions, and potential toxicity

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: This review compares the bioavailability, toxicity, and nutritional functions of inorganic, organic, and novel selenium sources in fish. Organic selenium sources have higher bioavailability and lower toxicity compared to inorganic selenium sources. Dietary selenium requirements for different fish species should be estimated using different selenium sources and multiple parameters.

Biofortified Diets Containing Algae and Selenised Yeast: Effects on Growth Performance, Nutrient Utilization, and Tissue Composition of Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata)

Mariana Ferreira et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of biofortified diets containing microalgae, macroalgae, and selenised yeast on gilthead seabream. The results showed that microalgae can partially replace fish meal and fish oil in the diets for seabream. The addition of macroalgae and selenised yeast should be controlled at proper levels. The muscle of seabream fed with microalgae diets had higher EPA and DHA content, and their retention and gain of selenium were also increased. However, more research is needed for iodine fortification in fish.

Effect of sulphur on selenium accumulation and speciation in Nannochloropsis oceanica

Barbara O. Guimaraes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of sulphur on selenite accumulation in the microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica. The results showed that low concentrations of sulphur significantly increased selenium accumulation, while high concentrations of sulphur reduced selenium accumulation. Additionally, sulphur had no significant effect on total fatty acid content.

Effect of ammonium formate washing on the elemental composition determination in Nannochloropsis oceanica

Barbara O. Guimaraes et al.

Summary: The study found that washing marine microalgal biomass twice is sufficient for more accurate elemental analysis without cell rupture, reducing the concentration of Na, K, and Ca in the leftover growth medium. This provides a reliable protocol for saving time in sample processing and analysis.

Acclimation of photosynthesis and lipids biosynthesis to prolonged nitrogen and phosphorus limitation in Nannochloropsis gaditana

Nicolo Fattore et al.

Summary: This study found that the microalgae Nannochloropsis gaditana can acclimate to chronic nitrogen or phosphorus limitation by accumulating lipids without inducing fatty acid synthesis but by modulating carbon flux towards lipid biosynthesis, maintaining photosynthetic activity. Moreover, photosynthetic activity was maintained under phosphorus limitation but was strongly affected by nitrogen depletion.

Selenium enrichment in the marine microalga Nannochloropsis oceanica

Barbara O. Guimaraes et al.

Summary: Selenium-enriched ingredients are gaining interest in aquaculture for their positive effects on fish health and growth. This study assessed the suitability of inorganic selenium species for producing selenium-enriched N. oceanica biomass for aquafeed, finding that selenite had minor negative effects on cell growth and was better accumulated than selenate. A concentration of 30μM selenite was selected for pilot-scale cultivation, resulting in similar selenium accumulation compared to flask cultivation.

Summary: This study evaluated the selenium (Se) removal efficiency of two pilot-scale high-rate algae ponds (HRAPs) treating domestic wastewater and found that selenium-enriched microalgae may serve as a promising feed supplement, offering high protein content and potentially increasing the levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids in microalgae.
