Influence mechanism of C/N ratio on heterotrophic nitrification- aerobic denitrification process

Xin Gu et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the C/N ratio can enhance the HNAD performance of Acinetobacter junii ZHG-1, but the effect diminishes when the C/N ratio exceeds 30. Therefore, more research efforts should focus on the influence mechanism of different environmental factors on the HNAD process.

Heterotrophic nitrification-An eternal mystery in the nitrogen cycle

Pertti J. Martikainen

Summary: Despite being discovered more than 100 years ago, the biochemistry of heterotrophic nitrifiers and their contribution to soil nitrification remains poorly understood. Heterotrophic nitrifiers require organic compounds for energy, unlike chemolithotrophic nitrifiers. Most pathways for nitrite/nitrate production by heterotrophs can be considered secondary metabolism. Only some heterotrophic bacteria have been found to have a connection to the energy metabolism through nitrification and simultaneous denitrification. The nitrification pathways of bacteria and fungi differ and the role of heterotrophic nitrification in soil nitrogen cycle remains uncertain due to the diverse and poorly known biochemistry of heterotrophic nitrification.

Summary: Traditional nitrogen removal methods rely on autotrophic nitrification and anaerobic denitrification, but heterotrophic nitrification & aerobic denitrification microorganisms (HNADMs) have the potential to simultaneously achieve nitrification, denitrification, and even phosphorus removal. This suggests that HNADMs could be a valuable tool for wastewater pollution removal.
