Links between carbon/nitrogen ratio, synergy and microbial characteristics of long-term semi-continuous anaerobic co-digestion of food waste, cattle manure and corn straw

Wanli Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the links between C/N ratio, synergy, and microbial characteristics of anaerobic co-digestion of different organic wastes. Co-digestion demonstrated the ability to overcome C/N imbalance, achieve multiple synergies, and improve methane production. Adjusting the C/N ratio of the system led to enhanced methanogenic functions and system stability.

Biogas production, DOM performance and microbial community changes in anaerobic co-digestion of chicken manure with Enteromorpha and green waste

Shunan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study found that adding chicken manure as a co-substance can improve the biomethane production of Enteromorpha and green waste. It also showed changes in the excitation-emission matrix spectra and enhanced cellulase activity. Microbial community analysis and potential metabolic pathway analysis indicated that co-digestion enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogens.

Energy recovery from food waste and garden and park waste: Anaerobic co-digestion versus hydrothermal treatment and anaerobic co-digestion

Eneko Suarez et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the anaerobic co-digestion of food waste and garden and park waste, as well as the hydrothermal treatment of each waste and the anaerobic co-digestion of raw biowastes with process water. The results showed that anaerobic digestion was the best option for energy recovery from food waste, while the solid fraction generated from hydrothermal treatment had the highest energy recovery for garden and park waste. Additionally, the anaerobic co-digestion of food waste with process water improved process stability and achieved similar energy recovery to food waste alone.

Anaerobic co-digester microbiome during food waste valorization reveals Methanosaeta mediated methanogenesis with improved carbohydrate and lipid metabolism

Swapnil M. Patil et al.

Summary: The study found that low food waste loading in anaerobic digesters can increase methane production, while high loading can lead to extended lag phase and incomplete substrate utilization. The degradation rate of LCFAs is influenced by the initial FW loading, with up to 99% degradation rate at 4% FW reactor, while adding 8 to 10% FW substrate inhibits methane production.
