Ratio of nitrate to ammonium mainly drives soil bacterial dynamics involved in nitrate reduction processes

Tingting An et al.

Summary: This study found that fertilization and sampling time have an impact on the abundances of denitrifying and DNRA bacterial genes, with sampling time showing a greater influence. Long-term application of organic manure combined with mineral N fertilizer can mitigate nitrate leaching and N2O production, and the NO3-/NH4+ ratio is an important factor driving the dynamics of bacterial communities involved in the nitrate reduction process.

Novel intertidal wetland sediment-inoculated moving bed biofilm reactor treating high-salinity wastewater: Metagenomic sequencing revealing key functional microorganisms

Haifeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compares the performance of two moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR) with different seedings (intertidal wetland sediment and activated sludge) in treating high-salinity wastewater. Both reactors show excellent removal efficiency for TOC, but the intertidal wetland sediment reactor performs better in nitrogen reduction. Additionally, a positive linear relationship is found between metagenomic sequencing and DNA pyrosequencing through correlation analysis.

Efficient nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate in a step feed continuous plug-flow system based on one-stage anammox process

Shang Ren et al.

Summary: A continuous plug-flow multistage anoxic/oxic (A/O) system based on one-stage partial nitrification coupled anammox (PNA) process with integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) was established and operated effectively for 400 days. The system demonstrated high removal efficiency for inorganic nitrogen and achieved a significant shift in the dominant anammox bacteria genus during operation. The results and innovative system design hold great value for practical applications.

Performance and mechanism of simultaneous nitrification-denitrification and denitrifying phosphorus removal in long-term moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR)

Dandan Pan et al.

Summary: The long-term moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was operated successfully for simultaneous removal of nitrogen, phosphorus, and COD. Different C/N ratios were tested, and the results showed efficient removal of these pollutants. The study also investigated the microbial communities and biological processes involved in the removal.

Performance and bacterial community analysis of a two-stage A/O-MBBR system with multiple chambers for biological nitrogen removal

Xiaolin Zhou et al.

Summary: A two-stage anoxic/oxic-moving bed biofilm reactor system was established for municipal wastewater treatment. The system achieved high removal efficiencies for SCOD, NH4+-N, and TIN during different seasons. Functional bacterial populations were formed in different reactors, and the highest nitrification potential was found in the last oxic reactor of the first stage, while the highest denitrification potential was found in the post-anoxic reactors.

Polishing micropollutants in municipal wastewater, using biogenic manganese oxides in a moving bed biofilm reactor (BioMn-MBBR)

Guochen Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) combined with moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) for polishing micropollutants in wastewater treatment. Results showed enhanced removal compared to traditional MBBRs for specific micropollutants, but diclofenac removal was inhibited in municipal wastewater due to higher pH levels. Shifts in bacterial communities were observed in long-term operation of BioMn-MBBR, indicating great potential for practical application in removing a larger range of micropollutants.

Enhanced nitrogen removal from high-strength ammonium wastewater by improving heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification process: Insight into the influence of dissolved oxygen in the outer layer of the biofilm

PengYing Xiao et al.

Summary: Optimizing the heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification process in the membrane-aerated biofilm reactor by increasing dissolved oxygen concentration in the outer layer biofilm enhances removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, TN, and COD. The increase in DO concentrations promotes the enrichment of HN-AD bacteria and leads to a superior nitrogen removal process in high-strength NH4+-N wastewater treatment.

Nitrification and denitrification in recirculating aquaculture systems: the processes and players

Prasannan Geetha Preena et al.

Summary: One of the major challenges in sustainable aquaculture production systems is the accumulation of nitrogenous waste. By establishing in situ nitrification and denitrification through biofilters/bioreactors activated with nitrifying/denitrifying bioaugmentors, total nitrogen removal can be achieved without external carbon supplements or additional anaerobic compartment. The structure and population dynamics of nitrifying/denitrifying consortia in recirculating aquaculture systems are influenced by environmental factors, which are crucial for the success of the processes.
