Evolution of physicochemical properties and bacterial community in aerobic composting of swine manure based on a patent compost tray

Yihui Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the changes in physicochemical properties and bacterial community during swine manure composting using a new compost tray. The results showed a decrease in organic matter and moisture content, while total nitrogen, P2O5, K2O, and humic acids increased. Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla during composting.

AutoWeka4MCPS-AVATAR: Accelerating automated machine learning pipeline composition and optimisation

Tien-Dung Nguyen et al.

Summary: Automated machine learning pipeline composition and optimisation aim to automate the process of finding the most promising ML pipelines within allocated resources. However, existing methods that evaluate pipelines by executing them often require a significant amount of time and prevent exploration of complex pipelines. To address this issue, a surrogate model named AVATAR is proposed to evaluate ML pipelines without execution, allowing for quicker rejection of invalid pipelines and evaluation of more pipelines within the same time budget. Integrating AVATAR into the SMAC algorithm configuration results in finding better solutions compared to using SMAC alone.

Modeling Influence of Soil Properties in Different Gradients of Soil Moisture: The Case of the Valencia Anchor Station Validation Site, Spain

Ester Carbo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the prediction of soil moisture in the Valencia Anchor Station area using INLA-SPDE methodology, finding that a model with all covariates and spatial effects has the lowest DIC value, and a strong correlation between observed and predicted values. The methodology used allows for the analysis of the significance of different covariates with spatial and temporal effects, providing a faster and more effective alternative to traditional kriging methods. The findings of the study demonstrate advancements in understanding the influence of hydrodynamic properties on soil moisture variability, as well as the reproducibility and ease of comparison with models.

Organic matter- and temperature-driven deterministic assembly processes govern bacterial community composition and functionality during manure composting

Yuanyuan Bao et al.

Summary: The study found that deterministic assembly processes, governed by organic matter content and quality as well as temperature, play a predominant role in shaping bacterial community assembly and functions during organic waste composting. Specific bacterial taxa were selected at different stages by these assembly processes, ultimately influencing community functions such as environmental processing and carbohydrate metabolism. These findings are crucial for understanding and predicting microbial-driven composting processes and for guiding environmentally-friendly composting practices.
