Anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source for sustainable microalgae cultivation: A way forward through waste valorization approach

Chi Cheng Chong et al.

Summary: Microalgae are considered high potential feedstocks for liquid fuels to meet the increasing global energy demand, but the high costs of nutrients can hinder commercialization. Using organic-rich anaerobic digestate as a low-cost nutrient source can improve economic viability and sustainability of microalgae production, while also reducing waste and reutilizing organic fractions. Proposed solutions such as digestate dilution, microalgae strain selection, and additional organics can address challenges related to nutrient availability and toxicity, providing future directions for research in cultivating microalgae.

High-efficiency biofuel production by mixing seawater and domestic sewage to culture freshwater microalgae

Feng Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of seawater addition on the precipitation performance and biofuel production of freshwater microalgae. The results showed that the addition of seawater improved the sedimentation performance and lipid content of the microalgae. The highest algal lipid productivity was achieved in wastewater containing 60% seawater. Seawater addition increased cell diameter, reduced zeta potential, and promoted the synthesis of extracellular polymeric substances, improving the precipitation performance of the microalgae cells. Glutathione peroxidase played a role in removing reactive oxygen species produced by seawater stress. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing microalgae biofuel production.
