Co-upgrading of ethanol-assisted depolymerized lignin: A new biological lignin valorization approach for the production of protocatechuic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoic acid

Linh Thanh Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a promising biological co-upgrading of ethanol-assisted depolymerized lignin into protocatechuic acid and polyhydroxyalkanoic acid without the need for separation processes. By engineering a Pseudomonas putida KT2440 strain, the efficiency of ethanol utilization pathway was enhanced, resulting in the production of value-added bioproducts. The utilization of formaldehyde promoted the growth and production of PCA and PHA from depolymerized lignin, with ethanol solvent also being used for co-upgrading.

Juan E. Ramirez-Morales et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the potential of wild type Pseudomonas strains to contribute to lignin valorization in future biorefineries, particularly by accumulating naturally marketable biopolymers like mcl-PHA through robust aromatic catabolism under nitrogen limitation. By manipulating nitrogen and oxygen supply for the robust strain P. putida KT2440, significant improvements in mcl-PHA accumulation were achieved. The research also highlights the different accumulation patterns of aromatic intermediates under various oxygen conditions.
