An integrated process for mixed culture production of 3-hydroxyhexanoa-te-rich polyhydroxyalkanoates from fruit waste

Fernando Silva et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the feasibility of producing a ter-polymer enriched in 3-hydroxyhexanoate (HHx) from waste using a mixed-culture 3-stage process. By fine-tuning each stage and selecting a highly efficient PHA-accumulating culture, the process achieved unprecedented values of yield, productivity and HHx fraction, making significant progress towards upscaling the production of HHx-rich PHA from waste.

Influence of feedstock mix ratio on microbial dynamics during acidogenic fermentation for polyhydroxyalkanoates production

Borja Lagoa-Costa et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the microbial dynamics in response to a gradual change in feedstock composition during co-digestion of cheese whey and brewery wastewater, as well as its impact on PHA production. The results showed that the microbial community changed as the feedstock ratio gradually increased, leading to alterations in VFA profile and monomeric composition of the biopolymer.

Potential of anaerobic co-fermentation in wastewater treatments plants: A review

N. Perez-Esteban et al.

Summary: Fermentation is an emerging biotechnology for transforming waste into easily assimilable organic compounds. Co-fermentation of multiple waste streams in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can increase the yields of sludge fermentation. The most studied variables in co-fermentation include mixing ratio, pH, and temperature. Continuous co-fermentation can be optimized by controlling temperature, pH, hydraulic retention time, and organic load. This review provides a comprehensive and critical overview of co-fermentation research and lays the foundation for future studies.

Bibliometric Mapping of Research on Life Cycle Assessment of Olive Oil Supply Chain

Ileana Blanco et al.

Summary: The olive oil supply chain and its various stages have been extensively studied through life cycle assessment (LCA) in recent years. Most practices in the olive oil supply chain have been found to have negative environmental impacts. This study conducted a bibliometric analysis and science mapping approach to review the LCA studies of the olive oil sector, focusing on the environmental impacts of agricultural and industrial practices. The analysis revealed that recent publications have primarily focused on the application of LCA to evaluate innovative agricultural practices, sustainable pest and weed control, and the utilization of waste and by-products within a circular economy.

Summary: The composition of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) monomers affects the properties and final applications of PHA polymers. This study successfully produced tailored PHA with different hydroxyvalerate (HV) content through manipulation of the acidogenic fermented stream composition, and determined the best composition for melt processing. The results demonstrated the robustness of the process and supported full-scale applications in tailored PHA production.

A review of winery wastewater treatment: A focus on UASB biotechnology optimisation and recovery strategies

Nkhensani Ngwenya et al.

Summary: The upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) bioreactor is a sustainable biotechnology solution for winery wastewater management. It has the potential to save energy, water, sludge waste, and chemical residue compared to aerobic wastewater treatment systems. Successful implementation of the UASB bioreactor requires preparedness to handle fluctuating wastewater discharge and meet legislative quality demands. Rapid analysis methods and post-treatment options can aid in inexpensive wastewater quality control. Optimal biogas production and COD removal in the UASB bioreactor depend on specific conditions.

Srikanth Vuppala et al.

Summary: A treatment train for the remediation of raw olive mill wastewater was investigated, and a system consisting of pre-treatment, coagulation, biological oxidation, and advanced oxidation process (AOP) was proposed. The coagulation and biological oxidation stages achieved high removal efficiencies of various pollutants, while different AOPs had varying degrees of effectiveness. The operational costs for the different stages varied, with ozonation being the most expensive.

Sludge retention time impacts on polyhydroxyalkanoate productivity uncoupled storage/growth processes

Mariana Matos et al.

Summary: The study proposed the utilization of mixed microbial cultures for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates from waste-based substrates. Different sludge retention times and organic loading rates were tested to investigate the dynamics of growth versus storage in the mixed culture. Results showed that cultures with lower sludge retention times grew faster but had inferior storage capacity and lower PHA productivity.

Influence of different household Food Wastes Fractions on Volatile Fatty Acids production by anaerobic fermentation

Giuseppe Strazzera et al.

Summary: The research investigated the influence of different fractions of Household Food Wastes on Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) production for the first time. Fractions rich in proteins and starch led to higher VFA production, while those rich in cellulose, fibers, and sugars showed lower VFA production. The microbial communities composition was also influenced by the chemical nature of the food waste.
