Teng Cai et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on the effect of weak electrical stimulation on biofilms in a bioelectrochemical anammox system. Continuous stimulation was found to enhance the electron transfer system activity and nitrogen removal, while also facilitating the secretion of extracellular polymer substances and promoting the formation of compact biofilms. Microbial analysis showed an increase in specific microorganisms, indicating the importance of weak electrical stimulation in diversifying the microbial community and creating a robust nitrogen metabolic pathway.

Summary: The cultivation of anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria (anammox) has attracted considerable attention in recent decades. However, the success rates of growing anammox in different enrichment environments are comparable to the failure rates. This study investigates the performance decline of a lab-scale anammox-sequencing batch reactor (SBR) under elevated influent substrate concentration, using various measurement techniques.

Simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification in an upflow microaerobic membrane bioreactor treating middle concentration of ammonia nitrogen wastewater with low COD/TN ratio

Bensheng Su et al.

Summary: This study investigated the rapid start-up and operation of a simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) process using synthetic wastewater in a novel upflow microaerobic membrane bioreactor (UMMBR). The results showed that the UMMBR with high sludge concentration and upflow mode facilitated the establishment of anaerobic zones for anammox, and the presence of carmine granules indicated the occurrence of the SNAD process. Anammox bacteria and short-cut denitrification bacteria played important roles in total nitrogen removal. High-throughput sequencing analysis revealed the microbial community structure of nitrifying organisms.

Recovery of anammox process performance after substrate inhibition: Reactor performance, sludge morphology, and microbial community

Kai Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the recovery process of a reactor after being inhibited by a high nitrogen load. The results showed that after 75 days of recovery, the nitrogen removal rate and stoichiometric ratio of the reactor were restored to pre-inhibition levels. The surface structure of the granular sludge changed to a broccoli-like structure, and there was an increase in the Ca and P contents of the granules. Moreover, the abundance of the anammox bacterium Candidatus brocadia also increased, and it showed a positive correlation with specific microbial species.

Removal of extracellular deoxyribonucleic acid increases the permeability and mass transfer of anammox granular sludge with different sizes

Dong-Qi Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response of anammox granular sludge to the removal of extracellular deoxyribonucleic acid (eDNA) and its mechanism. It was found that adding DNase I improved the bioactivity of the sludge and increased the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes. Settling experiments showed that the absence of eDNA increased the permeability and porosity of the sludge. Similar functional genes and microbial communities in intracellular and extracellular DNA suggested the occurrence of gene transmembrane transfer.

Influence of NaCl salinity on the aggregation performance of anammox granules

Aiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of salinity on the aggregation and surface characteristics of Anammox granules, revealing that increased salt concentration led to a decrease in granule size, aggregation index, and extracellular protein to polysaccharide ratio. Analysis showed that higher salinity reduced zeta potential and hydrophobicity of the sludge while increasing the repulsive barrier. Additionally, changes in EPS surface groups reduced hydrophobicity of Anammox granules, but did not enhance aggregation.

Summary: Hollow Anammox granular sludge is found to be effective in treating low-strength ammonia wastewater, with Candidatus Kuenenia as the dominant bacteria living within extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) shield. The formation of hollow granules involves cavitation and specific Anammox activity.EPS secretion is related to the specific Anammox activity and tryptophan or protein-like components are crucial in EPS formation within the granules.

Insight into the influence of particle sizes on characteristics and microbial community in the anammox granular sludge

Chongjun Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated how particle size affects the physicochemical characteristics, nitrogen conversion activity, and microbial community in anammox sludge granules. The results showed that larger particle sizes correlated with higher wet density, settling velocity, and removal efficiency of ammonium and nitrite. High-throughput sequencing revealed that microbial richness and diversity decreased and then increased with increasing particle size. Granular sludge with a particle size of 1.0-1.5 mm had the largest EPS content and PN/PS ratio. To maintain high nitrogen removal performance, particle sizes of 1.5-2.0 mm should be selected.
