Effect of low salinity on nitrogen removal from municipal wastewater via a double-anammox process coupled with nitritation and denitratation: Performance and microbial structure

Wenyu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of low salinity levels on a double-anammox system in treating municipal wastewater, finding that a salinity of 1.0% led to a nitrogen removal efficiency of 81.2%, with a significant contribution of 76.5% from anammox. Low salinity was also found to promote nitritation and denitratation, enhancing the overall nitrogen removal efficiency. The enrichment of specific microbial populations, such as Ca. Brocadia and Nitrosomonas, further supported the effectiveness of the double-anammox process in treating saline wastewater.

Efficient degradation of molasses wastewater from sugar mill by lipase via addition reaction

Longhan Wei et al.

Summary: The potential of lipase in decolorizing molasses wastewater was investigated in this study, and it was found that Lecitase Ultra lipase achieved the highest decolorization yield among all the enzymes analyzed. It can be applied on a larger industrial scale compared to cutinases and keratinases. By combining immobilization technology and deep eutectic solvent, the immobilized Lecitase Ultra exhibited excellent enzymatic properties and achieved the highest decolorization yield among all the immobilized enzymes. These findings provide a reliable approach for the decolorization of molasses wastewater.

Stratification patterns of anammox granular sludge bed: Linking particle size distribution to microbial activity and community

Da Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stratification patterns of anammox granular sludge bed (GSB) and its relationship with microbial activity and community under different nitrogen loading rates (NLRs). Results show that the particle size distribution of GSB is significantly correlated with the nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of the anammox system. The microbial community tends to coverage at high NLR. Additionally, the particle size distribution patterns of GSB may serve as a potential auxiliary indicator to reflect microbial activity and community.

Exploration and verification of the feasibility of sulfide-driven partial denitrification coupled with anammox for wastewater treatment

Yang-Fan Deng et al.

Summary: A sulfide-driven partial denitrification and anammox (SPDA) process was developed and operated continuously with stable performance for 392 days, achieving 80% nitrogen removal efficiency. Sulfide had inhibitory effects on anammox activity, but rapid oxidation by sulfur-oxidizing bacteria relieved these effects. High-throughput sequencing identified Thiobacillus and Sulfurimonas as dominant SOB genera, and Candidatus Kuenenia as the dominant anammox bacteria in the SPDA system, laying the foundation for future practical applications.

Jin-Jin Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that antibiotic-exposed anammox granules were more affected in nitrogen removal efficiency and reduction of Kuenenia candidate abundance when exposed to copper nanoparticles. Observations indicated that anammox granules exposed to CuNPs were more susceptible to inhibition, suggesting a potential role of antibiotic resistance genes in the generation of multiresistance.
