Heavy metals uptake and translocation of typical wetland plants and their ecological effects on the coastal soil of a contaminated bay in Northeast China

Xiuxiu Yan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that using local wetland plants is an effective approach for remedying heavy metal pollution in coastal soil. By selecting and planting specific plants, the ecological risk of heavy metal pollution in Jinzhou Bay was reduced, leading to improved regional environmental quality and increased microbial diversity in the rhizosphere soil. The results highlight the importance of utilizing suitable vegetation in restoring contaminated coastal areas.

Transfer of functional microorganism: Regulation of N-acyl-homoserine lactones on the microbial community in aniline-degrading sequencing batch biofilm reactor

Junhao Su et al.

Summary: By adding exogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), this study improved nitrogen removal efficiency in aniline wastewater treatment. High-throughput sequencing results showed that a closer relationship between nitrifiers and denitrifiers in the biofilm contributed to enhanced nitrogen removal.

Structural dependent persulfate activation by coke powder for aniline degradation

Xi Zheng et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the activation performance of coke powder (CP) towards persulfate (PS) and discussed its mechanism for organic pollutant degradation. The results show that CP has highly disordered amorphous structures with abundant oxygenated functional groups (OFGs) and persistent free radicals (PRFs), which contribute to the excellent activity of CP for PS activation. The study also reveals that superoxide anion radical (O-2•) is responsible for the degradation of organic pollutants in the CP/PS system, and its generation is independent of dissolved oxygen. These findings provide important insights for the development of remediation materials using by-products of the coking process for wastewater treatment.

Microbial community and function evaluation in the start-up period of bioaugmented SBR fed with aniline wastewater

Wenli Zhang et al.

Summary: An enhanced sequencing batch reactor (SBR) system was developed to treat synthetic wastewater rich in 600 mg/L aniline, achieving almost 100% aniline degradation efficiency and over 50% total nitrogen (TN) removal rate. Metagenomics technology revealed the community structure, functional genes, and metabolic mechanism, identifying dominant phyla such as Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Chloroflexi, and Actinobacteria. Functional genes involved in aniline degradation and nitrogen metabolism were detected, showing the cooperation and competition of Thauera, Delftia, Diaphorobacter, Micavibrio, and Azoarcus ensured the effective removal of aniline and nitrogen.

Understanding the impacts of operation mode sequences on the biological aniline degradation system: Startup phase, pollutants removal rules and microbial response

Haojin Peng et al.

Summary: The study compared the performance of different modes of SBR under the same aniline wastewater conditions, showing that all four systems achieved efficient aniline and NH4+-N removal with sufficient aerobic time. Among the four modes, the O/AX mode had the highest denitrification efficiency while the AN/O/AX mode had the lowest.

A metagenomic view of how different carbon sources enhance the aniline and simultaneous nitrogen removal capacities in the aniline degradation system

Haojin Peng et al.

Summary: To overcome the nitrogen removal barrier, carbon sources were applied in aniline degradation reactor to enrich heterotrophic nitrifiers and denitrifiers, leading to almost complete degradation of aniline and improved nitrogen removal performance in three systems. The Z2 system showed the highest total nitrogen removal efficiency and had more high-abundance communities compared to Z1 and Z3. The different systems followed the meta-cleavage pathway for aniline degradation, with Z2 exhibiting a more evenly distributed contribution of each genus to nitrogen metabolism and aromatic compounds degradation.

Comparison of the dynamic responses of different anammox granules to copper nanoparticle stress: Antibiotic exposure history made a difference

Jin-Jin Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that antibiotic-exposed anammox granules were more affected in nitrogen removal efficiency and reduction of Kuenenia candidate abundance when exposed to copper nanoparticles. Observations indicated that anammox granules exposed to CuNPs were more susceptible to inhibition, suggesting a potential role of antibiotic resistance genes in the generation of multiresistance.

Fatigue of anammox consortia under long-term 1,4-dioxane exposure and recovery potential: N-kinetics and microbial dynamics

Sherif Ismail et al.

Summary: Long-term exposure to 1,4-dioxane should not exceed 10 mg/L for successful application, as higher concentrations can significantly inhibit anammox bacteria. The first compartment of the PABR acts as a shield against the toxicity of 1,4-dioxane through high EPS secretion, but prolonged exposure at higher concentrations can lead to bacterial lysis. Despite initial inhibition, anammox bacteria were able to recover after cesation of 1,4-dioxane exposure.

Fragmentation of nanoplastics driven by plant-microbe rhizosphere interaction during abiotic stress combination

Hakwon Yoon et al.

Summary: Research shows that smaller, fragmented nanoplastics can accumulate in the roots of Arabidopsis thaliana under combined nanoplastic and Cd stresses. Specific changes in root exudation of organic acids and bacterial community composition indicate a metabolic preference for aromatic compounds that drive the degradation of nanoplastics in the rhizosphere.
