Carvacrol modulates the expression and activity of antioxidant enzymes in Candida auris

Mishka Ismail et al.

Summary: Outbreaks associated with Candida auris have increased globally. This study assessed the impact of carvacrol on the growth and survival of C. auris, as well as its effect on antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation. The results showed that carvacrol has antifungal activity and induces oxidative stress.

Membrane-Interacting Antifungal Peptides

Caroline Struyfs et al.

Summary: The incidence of invasive fungal infections is on the rise globally, leading to over 1.6 million deaths annually. With growing antifungal drug resistance and limited options, there is a clear need for innovative antifungal strategies. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) show promise due to their broad-spectrum activity and potential interactions with fungal membranes.

Antimicrobial Peptides Human Beta-Defensin-2 and-3 Protect the Gut During Candida albicans Infections Enhancing the Intestinal Barrier Integrity: In Vitro Study

Alessandra Fusco et al.

Summary: The intestinal mucosa is made up of a single layer of epithelial cells that are highly polarized and connected by tight junctions. Disruption of the mucus layer and tight junctions can increase intestinal permeability, leading to microbial translocation and systemic disorders. Studying the interaction between antimicrobial peptides and microbiota can help us understand how they play a role in host defense against intestinal pathogens.
