Fibrates: A Possible Treatment Option for Patients with Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm?

Naofumi Amioka et al.

Summary: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a life-threatening disease without established treatment. Fibrates, such as fenofibrate, can regulate the pathogenesis of AAA through anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects. This paper summarizes the studies on the effects of fenofibrate on AAA and discusses the issues associated with its use as a therapeutic agent.

Twenty Years of Studying AngII (Angiotensin II)-Induced Abdominal Aortic Pathologies in Mice: Continuing Questions and Challenges to Provide Insight Into the Human Disease

Hisashi Sawada et al.

Summary: AngII infusion in mice is a useful animal model for studying human abdominal aortic aneurysms, but many questions about the pathological characteristics and cell types involved in this process remain unanswered. Most studies focus on the initiation of abdominal aortic aneurysms rather than the treatment of established disease, which hinders the extrapolation of findings to the human disease.

A Dual Role of Heme Oxygenase-1 in Angiotensin II-Induced Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in the Normolipidemic Mice

Aleksandra Kopacz et al.

Summary: In normolipidemic mice, the deficiency of HO-1 can slow down the development of AAA, but exacerbate the condition of formed AAA. This dual role is not associated with enhanced inflammatory response or oxidative stress, but with an increase in regulators of aortic remodeling and angiotensin receptor-2 expression, significant medial thickening, and delayed blood pressure elevation in response to AngII.

Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells in Aortic Aneurysm: From Genetics to Mechanisms

Summary: Aortic aneurysm, including thoracic and abdominal types, is a prevalent aortic disease and a major cause of death globally. Treatments include open surgery and endovascular procedures. Thoracic aneurysm is more genetically influenced, while both types share common features like loss of VSMCs and inflammation.

Metformin Inhibits Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Formation through the Activation of the AMPK/mTOR Signaling Pathway

Jiaan He et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that MET inhibits AAA formation by activating the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway, resulting in decreased aortic diameter, inhibition of macrophage infiltration and matrix metalloproteinase expression, reduced neovascularization, preservation of the contractile phenotype of aortic vascular smooth muscle cells, and promotion of autophagy.
