A review on mechanical-based microalgae harvesting methods for biofuel production

Mahyar Ghazvini et al.

Summary: Microalgae have great potential as a feedstock for biofuel production, but the high cost of harvesting makes their utilization economically unfeasible. Mechanical-based harvesting methods, such as centrifugation and filtration, are considered effective means of microalgae recovery, but they differ in terms of cost and efficiency. Centrifugation offers the highest cell removal efficiency but comes with the highest capital and operational costs, while sedimentation is relatively inexpensive and widely applicable. However, flotation needs to be combined with filtration, and may not be suitable for all algal cultures.

A critical review on the economic aspects and life cycle assessment of biodiesel production using heterogeneous nanocatalysts

Hossein Esmaeili

Summary: This review paper focuses on the economic aspects of biodiesel production using nanocatalysts from different oil sources. The findings reveal that the use of CaO and MgO nanocatalysts and their derivatives decreases the cost of biodiesel production due to their simple synthesis, low-cost, abundance in nature, and high catalytic ability. Moreover, labor costs and plant production capacity have a significant impact on the biodiesel price. Using low-cost and non-edible oils with high oil content, such as Schizochytrium sp. microalga and jojoba, can significantly reduce the cost of biodiesel production.
